Championship: Arva played neighbours Cornafean in the Hotel Kilmore Junior Football Championship Semi-Final on Saturday evening last in Kingspan Breffni Park and after a very tight game Arva emerged victorious by the minimum 2-11 to 2-10. This game was played with all the intensity of a local derby with little separating the sides over the hour. Cornafean opened the scoring through Barry Doyle straight from the throw in and added another inside the 1st minute from Jack Wharton but gradually Arva overtook them and led by 0-5 to 0-2 by the 9th minute with the scores coming from Conal Sheridan (0-2) Jonathan McCabe (0-2) and Peter Morris. The sides were level again in the 20th minute 0-5 each through Doyle, Pauric Tully and a Doyle free before Kevin Bouchier hit the net to put Arva back in the lead and was followed by a tremendous point from Jonathan McCabe inside the same minute. Cornafean had 2 points before the break from Doyle to leave Arva leading by 1-6 to 0-7 at half time. Cornafean had a point 5 minutes after the restart from Liam Duignan to reduce the lead to 1 point but Arva hit back inside a minute with McCabe on target. This was followed by points from Sheridan and 2 frees from Bouchier by the 47th minute to leave 5 points between them. Doyle pointed a free in the 49th minute and 4 minutes later they were awarded a penalty which Gerry Sheridan converted to leave the minimum in it again – 1-10 to 1-9. Bouchier pointed a free before Mc Cabe hit the net for Arva in the 57th minute to leave 5 points between them again. With 1 minute of normal time remaining Wharton pointed for Cornafean and 2 additional minutes were announced. An injury accounted for some of this time and with 63 minutes gone Niall Sheridan hit the net to leave a point in it again and from the kick out the long whistle sounded much to the delight of the Arva supporters. The game was played in a good sporting manner and while Conor McEntee and Barry Doyle received Black Cards there wasn’t an ugly incident in the entire game. Arva team and Scorers – Richard Keith, Cormac McCabe, James Morris, Shane Finnegan, Thomas Brady, Ciaran Brady, Paul Bouchier, Fergal McGlade, Cian Sheridan, Conor McEntee, Jonathan McCabe (1-4), Peter Morris (0-1), Brian Ellis, Kevin Bouchier (1-3), Conal Sheridan (0-3). Subs – Gavin Doyle, Brian Fitzpatrick, Stephen Ellis, Sean McManus.
Final: That win puts Arva into the Championship Final for the second year in a row which will be played on Sunday week, 5th October in Kingspan Breffni Park against Ballymachugh who defeated Arva in the opening game in the competition and will no doubt be favourites to repeat their victory. Very little separated these sides when they meet and Arva will be hoping to reverse the earlier result and defeat the favourites. Let us get all our supporters out for this game and be our #16th man.
