The Ramblers are very familiar with the gardens and adjoining forest at Tullynally Castle as it has become a tradition to start the Ramblers Walking Festival each May with an evening walk there. As a result it was interesting to see the Estate just entering its autumn phase on Sunday September 14th, with the chestnut trees the first to show a change of leaf colour. A lot of work has been done over the summer, especially in the Chinese Garden whose meandering streams and pools were especially attractive. The walk was extended with a loop through the forest beyond the Lower Lake. Thank you for your hospitality to Valerie and Thomas Pakenham of Tullynally, as well as Bartle D’Arcy and the staff of the Teashop in the Castle Court yard who laid on a delicious spread of tea, scones, cakes and cheesecake at the end of the afternoon. The Ramblers will travel to Bohernabreena in Dublin for their walk on Sunday September 28th for a 7km loop walk on roads around the Bohernabreena Reservoirs led by Mary McHugh. There will be an early start with cars leaving Boherquill at 10.30am and re-grouping at O’Brien’s Garage on the Lynn Road in Mullingar at 11am. The walk will begin at the Tibradden carpark in Bohernabreena. A packed lunch is advised for the trip. Please take special note of the early start. Plans are at an early stage for a weekend away on Friday 17th to Sunday 19th of October. The destination will be Drumshanbo, in an area with lots of great walks. Anyone who is interested in joining the trip is asked to contact Brian Nerney at brian.nerney@gmail,com or 086 2596656 to ascertain numbers. Further details will be given in future notes and on the Ramblers website at www.boherquillramblers.ie as they become available.
