Owen Carron retires
On 24 June 2014, Mr Owen Carron retired having spent over ten years as Principal of St Mary’s National School. A native of Fermanagh, Mr Carron commenced his teaching career in Northern Ireland and had been Principal at Drumnamore National School in Aughavas, Co Leitrim before coming to Carrigallen in January 2004. Right from the beginning, Owen’s affable personality endeared him to staff, parents and pupils. During his term he oversaw many significant improvements at the school including the provision of some extra class room space quite recently. Enthusiastic about sport, Owen encouraged the various school teams, many of which enjoyed considerable success, and he was equally supportive of anything the school took part in, be it quizzes, art competitions, obtaining flags under the schools environmental flag scheme. Gaelic language and traditional music was of particular interest to him and he encouraged the promotion of both where the opportunity arose. Always a man for no fuss, Owen insisted his retirement function would be simple and involve the pupils, so on 24 June students, teachers, parents on Board of Management and Parent’s Association all joined Owen along with his wife, Siobhan and family for Mass celebrated by Fr D. Murray before returning to the school for refreshments where presentations were made by the Board of Management and students along with the Parents Association. Chair of the Board of Management, Jim Hannon paid tribute to Owen for his commitment and dedication over the years. While chair of Parent’s Association, Paddy O’Rourke wished Owen well in his retirement and thanked him for having been so easy to work with over the years. Veronica Harte, BoM presented Owens wife, Siobhan with a bouquet of flowers. Wishing Owen a long, healthy and a happy retirement.
