The official opening of Granard Market House Community Library takes place on this Thursday, 8 May at 3pm. Minister for the Environment Mr. Phil Hogan T.D. will perform the opening of the newly refurbished facility together with the Mayor of Co. Longford Larry Bannon and Mayor of Granard Town Council Maura Kilbride Harkin. This is a wonderful facility to have in our community and we all look forward to many years of enjoyable reading/information with Rosemary and staff in their magnificent new surroundings. Well done to the contractors Frank McKiernan who completed the project on target.

Tidy Towns

Granard Tidy Towns committee is holding a meeting on this Friday, 9 May at 8.30pm in the Credit Union meeting room. All are welcome. Darkness into Light

Please support Darkness into Light in aid of Pieta House in your county on Saturday morning, 10 May at 4.15am in The Mall, Longford. Pre-registration will take place on Wednesday between 5.30pm and 8pm in The Mall or come early on the morning of the walk. All are welcome.

The service continues at the offices of Granard Area Action Group each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you require information on any aspects of your rights and entitlements please call in and the Information Officer will deal confidentially with your query. The service is free to all.

Sales by Allsop

Two Granard premises were sold at Allsop Space Property Auctions in the RDS Dublin last week. The building that was formerly Hourican’s Hotel, Main Street sold for €65K and Tasty Bites, formerly Finnegan’s Drapery store on the corner of Main/Market Streets sold for €75K. We wish the new owners well with their purchases.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Drop in your cast offs, bric- a -brac to us at the Siopa or to the Centre, everything accepted. New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s, all sizes. Due to popular demand we are now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. As well as the first Tuesday of each month. All proceeds from the shop go directly to projects in the community.

Walking Club

We are stepping out again and great to see so many familiar faces.  Meeting as usual at Higginstown Sports Complex at 7.00pm every Monday evening. 


Meeting will take place on this Thursday 8 May in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at 2.30pm.

Virginia Gospel Choir

We are looking forward to welcoming the Virginia Gospel Choir for a performance on Sunday, 25 May at 6pm in St. Mary’s Church. The choir will be joined by Jackie Callaghan and other All Ireland winning musicians from the World Academy of Irish Music and Dance from the University of Limerick as well as our own excellent St. Mary’s Church Choir. Cycle & Climb

The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Cycle & Climb from Longford to Croagh Patrick, is on Sunday 1st June.  This unique event which started in 2011 entails a 147km cycle and then climb to the summit of Croagh Patrick.  The popularity of this event has grown massively over the last couple of years and this year’s will be bigger than ever. Balmoral Show

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Barrack Street, Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot this week is €15,500.

Boherquill Ramblers

The annual walking festival will take place from 9 – 11 May. Commencing with an evening walk in the grounds and woodlands of Tullynally Castle Castlepollard the home of author Thomas Pakenham (Lord Longford) and his wife Valerie. Walk will be followed by light refreshments in the Tea Rooms of the Castle. Saturday is an all day walk. Book Launch

Granard native, Noel Monohan will launch his 6th collection of poems entitled “Where The Wind Sleeps” on this Thursday, 8 May at 8.00pm in Cavan Court House. Congratulations to Noel and we wish him continued success for the future.


The Park House Hotel Edgeworthstown will celebrate it’s 28th Anniversary with a Gala Charity night on Monday, 12 May with some of Ireland’s Top Sports and Entertainment Stars. Temple Street Children’s University Hospital is holding a Benefit night in the Crossroads Inn, Lisryan on Saturday, 17 May. Music by Noel Briody. Raffle on the night for valuable prizes. Your support will be appreciated.


The death of Kathleen Dempsey, Lisrathigan, Coolarty occurred on Sunday, 27 May. Removal took place from Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown to St. Mary’s, Granard on Tuesday. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday followed by burial in Granardkile old cemetery. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to her family and extended family circle.
