The Ramblers were shocked and saddened by the loss of Cathal McWeeney, a long-time member of the group, on 16th February. Cathal was very well-liked and his wide range of interests meant that a walk with Cathal was always a very enjoyable and informative experience. May he rest in peace. Oliver Usher led the Ramblers on their annual ‘Snowdrop Walk’in Drewstown on Sunday February 16th. There were some snowdrops around Drewstown House at the start of the walk but the highlight of the afternoon was the visit to Sinead Connolly’s garden just down the road. Mrs. Connolly welcomes the Ramblers to her garden each year at this time to see the splendid display of many varieties of snowdrops beneath the trees. The white flowers were particularly eye-catching this year, along with many hellebores, cyclamen, aconites and crocus in other areas. The Ramblers continued on to follow a track through the forest beside Girley Bog; the intended route through the bog itself was too muddy for walking. The forest track led onto a very old road leading back to Drewstown House where the walkers were treated to a feast of cakes, biscuits and fruit crumble prepared and served by Aideen Usher and her helpers. John Bailey of Drewstown gave a brief account of the history of the House since 1954 when an American missionary group opened an orphanage there. John returned to Ireland from abroad to join the group which now runs camps for disadvantaged city children and retreat weekends for various church groups. The Ramblers wish to thank Oliver and Aideen Usher, Sinead Connolly and John Bailey for making their Sunday afternoon walk such a pleasure. On Sunday March 2nd Frances Nolan will lead a walk in Taghmon, near Mullingar. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at Taghmon Church at 2pm.
