Monday, February 24 – Sunday, March 9. This year’s theme, THE POWER OF YOU, reminds us that we have the power to do something amazing – the power to help producers in developing countries build better futures for themselves and improve working conditions around the world. All we have to do is choose FAIRTRADE-Mark food and non-food items and ‘change the world one purchase at a time’. By doing so we help to challenge injustice, advance trade that is fairer, and contribute to the wellbeing of fellow human beings and the environment. The POWER OF YOU campaign is asking us to re-imagine a simple truth: that choices and actions we make can create a real difference in people’s lives. So through THE POWER OF YOU we can play our part by completing the STORE REQUEST leaflet recently circulated with the Parish Newsletter and also available in the four shops in Bal, and hand it in to whichever shop you buy your groceries. This action from you will have a three-fold effect, i.e., (i) it’s a personal promise to the shopkeeper that you will honour your commitment to buy these products in his/her shop, (ii) that the shopkeepers can arrange to stock the FAIRTRADE-Mark stuff requested by you with the assurance that you will continue to buy it, and (iii) the joy of knowing that by choosing to act on the POWER OF YOU theme in our own villiage, we will make our own individual and significant contribution to creating a real difference in the lives of producers, their families and communities in desperate need in the developing world. THANK YOU to the 6th class pupils of Scoil Samhthann, School Principal, Ms Linda Hughes, and staff, especially class teacher Ms Laura Gannon for their excellent presentation of THE POWER OF YOU theme though their art work on display in Holy Trinity Church to which everyone is welcome to ‘come and see’.
