Happy Christmas

To all readers of these notes at home or overseas I wish each and every one of you a very Happy ,and Joyful Christmas and Peace and prosperity in 2014. To all our visitors home for Christmas we welcome you and hope you have an enjoyable and relaxed time in our community. We are thinking of all who have emigrated from the Parish in the past year and wish you all the blessings of the season wherever you are. Hopefully you will visit home again soon perhaps in 2014!. To the Management and Staff of the Longford Leader I thank you for your kindness, courtesy help and support with the notes during the year and hope we continue our relationship in 2014. Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to these notes by letter, phone or email during 2013 your contributions and news items are invaluable to me. To all the children in the community – hope Santa comes, hope you enjoy your holidays, and if you are going outside please wear a high vis vest – Be Safe Be Seen!. Should Santa bring a new bicycle please be careful and cycle sensibly wearing your helmet. To all the elderly in the Parish – please call someone if you need help over the festive season, and if the weather turns nasty stay indoors and stay warm, someone will get your shopping for you. Finally, be sensible over Christmas. Don’t drink and Drive – it’s not worth the risk. Someone will take you home. So let’s all help each other this Christmas and make it a special happy occasion in our community, for everyone. Please note: All notes for next weeks paper must be with the correspondent on or before Thursday morning please, due to special arrangements at the Leader.

Longford Social Services

The Annual Church Gate Collection for County Longford Social services will be held in Drumlish on 21st &22nd December. This goes towards the provision of meals-on-wheels, transport services to and from hospitals, clinics and St. Joseph’s day care centre. Your support helps provide these facilities.

Celebrating New Life

At a recent meeting of the Parish Council it was decided to invite all parents and their newborn who were baptised over the past year to celebrate the occasion again as a Parish Group on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This will take place at Mass on Sunday 12th January in both Drumlish and Ballinamuck . Further details later.


The annual fundraiser for St Vincent’s minor club will take place on Saturday 28th of December in Dillon’s Bar & Bistro featuring Nite Fever .Hope to see you all there !

Eucharistic Adoration

The Eucharistic Adoration, suspended during the work on the Sanctuary, will resume this Monday after 9.30am Mass until 12 noon. Due to various circumstances, the numbers taking part has declined in recent times. More people are invited to come for 15, or 20 mns, half hour or an hour to offer adoration to the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In a time of great challenge to our faith, this precious time offers an opportunity also to pray for conversion, renewal, healing and a deepening of faith.

Confessions for Christmas

Advent calls us to repent, to make straight our paths, to put our lives and relationships in order. To help, there will be special penance services with confessions for the Christmas in our “cluster of parishes” as follows - Ennybegs: Monday 16th at 8.00pm & Cullyfad at 8.30pm; Drumlish : Sunday 22nd at 7.00pm; Newtownforbes: Monday 23rd at 7.30pm

A number of priests will be available on these three dates. Forgiveness and healing is a free gift of God’s love for us.

Senior Citizens Party

This year’s Christmas party will be held in the Olde Village Inn on January 5th at 4.00pm All welcome.

Poker Classic

There will be a 50/50 poker classic in Dillon’s Bar & Bistro on Friday 27th in Aid of Ballinamuck Defibrillator scheme. Start time is 4pm and all are welcome .Tickets on sale €20. Contact Tommy Leslie for details on 0868724458. Hope to see you all there for this very worthwhile cause .

Ballinamuck Diary

Daily Scripture reflections and meditations - The above will take place 30 minutes before Mass in St. Patrick’s Church Ballinamuck. Ballinamuck Christmas Bingo will take place on the Tuesdays in December @ 8.30pm .There will be extra prizes on every page and an extra prize of a hamper on the final Tuesday before Christmas ,when we expect a special visitor to visit with some goodies .Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the festive fun ! Ballinamuck Senior Citizens: The committee thank all who donated toward the church gate collection and all who helped with entertainment at the Senior Citizens Party. Everyone had a wonderful day and hope to see you all again next year. Playground update: Work has commenced on our playground in the past week, which we hope to complete by Christmas. Sincere thanks to all for their contributions, but some more fundraising will be required. Details will follow in the New Year. Children’s Choir

Congratulations and well done to the children from St. Patrick’s NS Ballinamuck on their splendid Carol Service in the Church last week. What a lovely entertaining evening for parents and grandparents alike. Thanks also to the Mulligan sisters for their supporting role, and entertainment on the evening.

Irish Night

There will be an Irish Night in the ‘98 Bar on Sunday 29th December at 8pm. Raffle in aid of Ballinamuck Twinning. All musicians, both young and old welcome for a great night of Traditional Irish Music.

Craft Fair

Christmas Craft Fair in aid of Suicide Prevention Centre Longford takes place in the ’98 Hall on Sunday next 22nd December from 10.00am to 2.00pm. All are invited to attend and you will be very welcome.

Senior Helpline

Senior Helpline, Ireland’s only confidential listening service for older people provided by older volunteers is open 365 days of the year. The help line is open every day of the Christmas Holiday and New Year season from 10.00am to 10.00pm. So don’t be alone. We are there. Welcome Home

Donal Caulwell from Clonmacart has returned to his native Clonmacart, Drumlish to retire following 40 years in Australia. We wish you a very happy retirement Donal and hope you will be very happy in your native place. No doubt, the brothers will be delighted to have you back and we hope you enjoy Christmas with them and all your old friends in the area. So welcome home.

County Longford Rural Transport

Longford Community Resources Ltd(LCRL) manage and administer the Rural Transport Programme, which covers the rural regions of County Longford. Many thanks to all the passengers and stakeholders who have supported, and indeed campaigned for the continuation of the Programme throughout the year. Spaces are still available for this “door to door” service in your area, so please contact your Local Provider or to Seamus (Co-Ordinator) at 043-3345555. slee@lcrl.ie All Age-Groups are welcome. Timetable: All routes for 2013 will be completed by Tuesday 31st December. Services for 2014 will resume on Thursday January 2nd. Recent deaths

Foley: The death took place in New York of Philomena Foley, nee Collum. Her funeral took place in Drumlish on Friday last. To her family, relations and friends, we extend our sincere and deepest sympathy. Go ndéana Dia Trócaire ar a anam dílís.
