Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday 9th December. The Jackpot was €4,900 – Numbers drawn were 9/ 17/ 19 / 23. No winner – €50 winners – Siobhán Doyle, Aughaga, Moyne. Conal Conneely, Arva. Elvis Curran, Corlisbratten. The Lotto Jackpot on Monday last 16th December was €4,950-00. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. The club have an option of paying by direct debit for anyone wishing to join the LOTTO and give the club much needed support. Contact any club officer or check out the club website Volunteers: On Saturday last despite the unpleasant weather a group of volunteers assembled in Michael Cully Park to continue the much needed improvement work to the pitch and the grounds in general. At one stage there were over 20 people working in bitter rain and wind and completed the first phase of the work. Anyone wishing to help out should contact the club officers. St Stephens Day Walk: Arva Juvenile Club have organised a Walk on St Stephens Day which is an excellent way to get a little gentle exercise after Christmas Day. Registration is in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva, Co Cavan from10.45 am. The Walk / Run leaves Arva at11.30am. Two routes11k/ 5k, Cycle, run, walk, jog. Refreshments afterwards in Breffni Arms hotel. The cost is €10 for an adult, €5 for under 16 or €20 for a family. Proceeds are in aid of Arva Active Age and Arva Juvenile GAA. Please support. U-21 Championship: St Joseph’s will play Bailieboro in the final of the U-21 Football Championship with the game most likely to take place on Sunday next 22nd December – check fixtures. We urge all supporters to get behind the team and cheer them on.

Christmas Eve 9.30pm Christmas Holy Communion in Arva. Christmas Day at 8.30am Family Christmas Communion in Columbkille followed by tea/coffee. In Carrigallen at 10.00am Family Christmas Communion. In Gowna at 11.30am Family Christmas Communion.

Corlisbratten Methodist Church

Christmas Morning Service will be held at 10.30 am. Sunday 29th December – Last Sunday Service at 10.15 am.

Church of the Sacred Heart

The Inter Church Carol Service on Thursday last was an outstanding success with a large congregation form the local churches in attendance. Rev Hazel Hicks, Priest in Charge of the Arva Church of Ireland group of Parishes was Guest Speaker. The Carol Singers were led by the Arva Folk Choir and refreshments were served afterwards in the School.

Mass for Christmas

The Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve will be in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Coronea at 7.00 pm, in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva at 9.00 pm. Mass on Christmas Day will be at 9am in Coronea and at 10am in Arva. Freshen up: Rev Donald Hannon C.C. has organised to tidy up in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva for Christmas. Volunteers are needed tonight Wednesday 18th December at 6.00pm. please come along and bring any cleaning products you think might be useful. Anniversary Masses: Beginning in 2014 Anniversary Masses must be booked with the Priest after Mass or at the Parochial House Tel 049 4335 246.

Hospital Visits

If there is anyone in hospital who would like a visit from any of the local clergy lease let them know and they would be privileged to call. Due to patient confidentially hospitals are not allowed to give out this information as was the case in the past.

The Arva Conference of St Vincent de Paul held their annual Church Gate collection on the weekend of 7th / 8th December with €191-90 raised in Coronea and €1,091-00 raised in Arva. The Conference are most grateful to everyone for their generous donations. The local SVP number is 087 187 9441.

Line Dancing: The Breffni Kickers Line Dancers held their Christmas Party on Friday night last in the Breffni Arms Hotel with a great attendance. The food was as usual first class and the dancing went on until late with everyone enjoying the night.

Christmas Lights

Santa Claus made his annual visit to Arva on Saturday evening last where a large number of children were present to greet him in St Patrick’s Hall. The Christmas Lights were first erected in Arva in 1962 and have been a feature of the town every year since then.

Longford Rural Transport

Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL) manage and administer the Rural Transport Programme, which covers the rural regions of County Longford. Many thanks to all the passengers and stakeholders who have supported, and indeed campaigned for the continuation of the Programme throughout the year. Spaces are still available for this “door to door” service in your area, please contact your Local Provider or to Seamus (Co-ordinator) at 043-3345555. All Age-Groups are welcome.! Timetable: ALL routes for 2013 will be completed by Tuesday the 31st December. Services for 2014 will resume on Thursday 2nd January. Wedding Bells

Congratulations are extended to Ms Ailise Finnegan, Castlepoles, Arva and Mr Niall Kelly, Ballinahowan, Co Westmeath who were married in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva recently. a reception followed in the Hotel Kilmore, Cavan attended by family and many friends. As a matter of interest the Best Man was none other than Mr Mark Rohan the Paralympics Champion. We wish Ailise and Niall many years of happiness in their future lives together.

Baby girl

Congratulations are extended to Eugene and Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Lisryan, Co Longford and formerly Main Street, Arva on the birth of their first baby – a girl – which occurred last week.

Dog Fouling

We have received a number of complaints of Dog Fouling on the pavements throughout the town. We would respectively request Dog Owners clean up after their dogs – there are many ways to do this and keep out footpaths clean.
