Walk in Derrycasson

A guided walk with Mr Pat Brady from Coillte will take place in Derrycasson Wood on Thursday 10 October (weather permitting) at 2.30pm. This will be a very interesting event and everyone is welcome to come along and hear of the history of the area; the trees; flowers and fauna. Please remember to wear suitable footwear.

Collins 22 Society

Cllr. Micheal Carrigy is organising a night of history on Friday 18 October at 8pm in The Greville Arms Granard. The topic for the night is Michael Collins his life and his links with Longford and Granard in particular. There will be numerous speakers on the night including Gerry O’Connell Hon. Secretary of the Collins 22 Society. Michael Doran lecturer and author; Margot Gearty niece of Kitty Kiernan and Michael McDowell former Minister for Justice and grandson of Eoin McNeill, Chief of Staff of the Volunteers during the 1916 Rising. There will also be an exhibition of the Kiernan/Collins letters in conjunction with Longford County Library. Admission is 10 euro which covers refreshments etc. Proceeds from the night go towards maintaining Collins grave in Glasnevin Cemetery. Country Markets.

Granard Country Markets continue in the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11.00am. As Winter now approaches the fire wood is back in stock along with the usual supply of Breads; Cakes; Jams; Free Range Eggs and Crafts.

Alzheimer’s

Is your loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias? Please join us for a FREE information evening for those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias in the Longford Arms Hotel Longford on Monday 14 October at 8.00pm. Speaker is Ms Joanne Flood Dementia Nurse Specialist from Home Instead Senior Care.

St. Mary’s Glotto

Credit Union Day

Granard Credit Union will celebrate Credit Union Day on 17 October. Tea / Coffee and goodies on the day. Come along and celebrate with us.

Walking Club

A large number of walkers enjoyed the beautiful morning walk with Granard Happy Heart Walking club and everyone found the pace to suit their stride. The group will meet this Saturday at 10.15am at Higginstown Sports complex. Please bring your high Vis Jackets. New members all ages welcome. See you there.

Longford ICA Federation

A trip to the Knit and Stitch Show in the RDS Dublin is being organised and a bus will run on Saturday 2 November. The bus will be free for ICA members, and a charge of 10 euro will apply to non-members. All tickets for those travelling to the show can be block booked together at €10 each for a group of ten or more. Please register your interest by Wednesday 16 October with Helen who can be contacted on 085-7101053 or 043-3325261 most evenings. There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot on Wednesday night last. Rosary Rally

A Rosary Rally and Crusade on behalf of our country and Ireland on Sunday 13 October from 3.15pm to 5.45pm in the Gaelic Football Park of Killoe Emmett G.A.A. Club. Co. Longford.  

Citizens Information

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizen’s Information Service will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Information Office Main Street every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Set Dancing

Set Dancing with Bill has resumed at Lus Na Greine FRC Main Street Granard on Monday nights starting at 7.30pm to 9.30pm each night. Everyone welcome.

St. Vincent de Paul Shop

“New 2U” shop at Market Street Granard is open every Friday and Saturday 10.00am to 6.00pm and the first Tuesday of every month from 10.00 to 6.00pm.

Hospice Morning

Mary McInerney, Siobhan Hynes and Eileen Kilbride who organised and hosted the annual Hospice Coffee Morning on Thursday the 19 September in Rath Mhuire Centre would like to express their thanks and gratitude to everybody for their generosity and support.

Moatsiders Active Age

Our next meeting date in Rath Mhuire Centre will be 17th October at 2.30pm. Activities for the afternoon are to be confirmed and we will have update for the next bulletin. Men’s Social Club

The next meeting date at Rath Mhuire Centre will be on Tuesday 8 October at 12 noon. Our club provides members with a forum to avail of a range of relevant informational topics, as well as the opportunity to engage in many community and social activities, with the added bonus of good company and good food. Dolmen Centre, Aughnacliffe

Library Service

The Library is based at our Centre during the refurbishment period opening time is every Friday 10pm – 5pm in the O’Carolan Room.

Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. This week’s Jackpot is €12,500. Sincere thanks to everyone who supports this fundraising activity. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.F.C.

Training

Training opportunities for People in receipt of any Disability/illness payment commences in the EDI Centre Longford.  This 8 week part time programme includes FETAC accredited modules with work experience included.  To register for this programme contact EDI Centre 043 3347515.

Spartak Granard F.C.

The club would like to thank everyone who donated to the Club’s recent Church Gate collection. The money raised has gone to purchase a new set of team jerseys. St. Mary’s GAA.

The Club held their Table Quiz on Friday night last in Fay’s Bar. The event was a great success and thanks to everyone who supported. a big thank you to all who attended, also to our sponsors and workers on the night. Our next event is on Saturday 19 October when we have a walk in Higginstown complex proceeds of which go to Longford Hospice more details next week. Well done to our lads who had a great win on Saturday evening and to our neighbours Northern Gaels on their great achievement.

County Finals

Congratulations to Northern Gaels the young footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta who won the Minor Championship on Sunday last in Glennon Bros. Pearse Park Longford. They defeated Killoe Og by 1.17 to 3.07. Congratulations to Nigel Rabbitte who won the Man of the Match award kindly sponsored by Pat the Baker in memory of the late Peter Sheridan the first Chairman of Northern Gaels Club. Well done to their mentors Maurice O’Connor team manager and selectors Dermot McCabe and David Sheridan. Best wishes to the U-16 Northern Gaels team who play Longford Slashers in the replay of their Co. Final on this Saturday in Longford. Congratulations to Longford Slashers who defeated Dromard in the Senior Championship final on a scoreline of 1.11 to 109. Well done to their captain Dermot Brady who was presented with Man of the Match award for an outstanding performance.

Gallant 15km Challenge

In aid of St Christopher’s Hospice Cavan takes place Saturday 26th October 2013. Main sponsor is MacManus Pharmacies Cavan. People can either walk, run or cycle the 15km from Cavan to Cornafean or choose the smaller course of Ballinagh to Cornafean. Over the previous nine years the Challenge has been an outstanding success raising 262,000 euro for this wonderful cause. The Country Dance of the Year
