Library: Good news at last for Granard when the Government announced a grant of €500K for the refurbishment of the Library premises at the Market House. The project will go to tender shortly and will give the town a state of the art facility.

Ard Scoil Phadraig: The School is to get four new class rooms and adjoining toilets connected to the main building by a covered walkway. Longford VEC has been granted planning permission and construction work is due to begin over the coming.

Employ Ability Midlands: An employment officer from Employ Ability Midlands will be available in Granard Area Action Group Office on Monday 27 May from 2.30-4.30pm. Give Blood: The Irish Blood Transfusion Service will be in St. Brigid’s Community Centre Loch Gowna on 29 and 30 May from 5pm to 8.30pm each day. Please note change of times for clinics. Please donate in order to keep supplies available at all times

Concert: Longford County Choir with orchestra will perform in concert “The Armed Man” by Karl Jenkins along with some other choral pieces in St. Mel’s Cathedral Centre St. Mel’s College Longford on Sunday 26 May at 7.00pm. Tickets are €10 each and are available at 087-6854876.

Glotto Results: The recent Granard draw was in Creegan’s Bunlahy. Numbers drawn 1-8-11-23. There was no outright winner. Congratulations to the following €30 winners: B. Smith The Hill Granard; David Hynes Higginstown Granard and Antony Clarke, Granard. Next week’s jackpot is €5,100.

Midland Retired Teachers: Midland Retired Secondary Teacher’s Association final meeting before the Summer recess will take place in Longford Library on Thursday 23 May at 10:30am. We hope to have short presentation on “Safety when using Technology” and other computer related topics. Please share your tips/best websites/shortcuts etc. with us on the day. The Gathering: Cemetery Sunday on 4 August in Granardkille. The Parish is taking this opportunity to avail of this day as a Gathering for all who are visiting the Community remembering the ones who have gone before us. This is an opportunity to Remember to Celebrate and to Welcome. It is planned to have a Gathering Event for the community with a family field day in St. Mary’s GAA ground following the religious ceremonies. There will be family entertainment organized on the day and this day will be an ideal opportunity for friends and family from far and wide to meet up.

Moatsider’s Active Age: The group celebrated their 10th Anniversary on Thursday last 15 May with friends from the Dolmen Club Aughnacliffe and the Manor Nursing Home Edgeworthstown joined in the afternoon of festivities with music and song provided by Cnoc Mhuire Ceile Band under the leadership of Ms. Campbell; Jody Sheridan Brigid Lynch and Kathleen Brady. It was a wonderful afternoon and well done to the organizing committee and their team of helpers. Continued success to the group for many more news

Cycle to Croagh Patrick: The 3rd Annual Cycle and Climb to Croagh Patrick for the Parish of Granard Lourdes Invalid Fund will take place on Saturday 1st June 2013. Last year was a very successful and enjoyable day as over 40 cyclists completed the event while many more people participated in the climb. We hope this year will be equally successful, and there is

plenty of time for any aspiring cyclists to fit in the training.

The Secret Life of the Shannon: Two part documentary exploring the wildlife of Ireland’s greatest river the Shannon. Colin Stafford Johnson examines Butterflies, Dragonflies, Kingfisher on the hunt and Daubenten’s Bats. The feature on the Kingfisher bird was filmed locally on the river Inny at Derragh Bridge Abbeylara. This programme is going out on RTE One at 6.30pm on Sunday evening next the 26 May. The second edition goes out on 2 June.
