Appeal: St. Vincent De Paul Granard are delighted to announce the opening of its charity shop in Market St. near the library on Saturday 16th March at 12 midday. Everyone welcome to attend. Our branch caters for the needs of the people in the Granard, Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta areas. We would appreciate clothing, bric a brac etc. for the shop. Items can be delivered to St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Saturday 9th March from 3.00p.m to 5.00p.m. Same will be accepted at the Sacred Heart National School any day before 3.00p.m. For further information call 085 1503905.

Lotto Draw: St. Columba’s G.F.C held their weekly lotto draw in Keogh’s on Thursday 7th March. The numbers drawn were 3, 12, 27, 29 with the jackpot of €2050 remaining intact. Got An Idea: St. Columba’s N.S. Board of Management would like to invite you to put forward your ideas as to what should be done with our old school building. The building has recently been renovated, so we now need to get it up and running as a working building. All suggestions are welcome. If you would like to make a proposal as to what purpose it could serve, please write down your idea and post back or hand into the school.

Ladies Footballers: As part of their fundraising activities the local ladies football club are holding a weekly draw based on the bonus ball in the main draw of the national lottery. Sheets are on sale in local shops or are available from any club member. Match the bonus ball o n Saturday’s night you will earn yourself €20. Lines are just €2. Six monthly tickets are available for €50 by contacting Marie Matthews. Your support would be very much appreciated each week. The winning number in Saturday night’s draw 9th March was 37. Majella Mooney came up trumps to earn herself €20.

Class Re-Union: Calling the class of 1986 Cnoc Mhuire, Granard. Nonagenarian: Congratulations to Tom Degnan, Culleenmore on the recent celebration of his ninetieth birthday. We are delighted to inform his many friends that Tom is still very alert and keeps up to date with what is happening at home and abroad. We wish himself and Kathleen good health and happiness for many more years.

Cadbury’s Leinster U-21 Championship: Well done to Longford U-21s on defeating the reigning provincial and All-Ireland title holders Dublin at Parnell Park on Wednesday evening last. Though the Dubs looked stronger in the first half and were leading at the break, Longford dominated proceedings for long periods in the second half. Local boy James McGivney was to the fore on many occasions and delivered some excellent balls to his Northern Gaels club mate Robbie Smith who scored 1-3. In a nervy finish the Longford backs held firm and secured victory over the red hot favourites. They now take on Wexford in the Leinster semi-final at O’ Moore Park, Portlaoise on Wednesday 20th March. We wish them well.

Airtricity League: Longford Town’s 2013 league campaign got off to a flying start with a 5-0 victory away to Salthill Devon on Friday night last. It was very much a night of firsts for De Town with Daniel Purdy’s goal in the eleventh being the first of the new season and David O’ Sullivan grabbing the first hat trick in the second half. This Saturday 16th March Waterford United are visitors to the re-named City Calling Stadium on the Strokestown Road. We wish De Town well in their bid for promotion.

Granard Country Market Free Raffle: Granard Country Market are having a free raffle on this Friday 15th March on account of St. Patrick’s Day. Special cards, cakes and goodies are now available for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. More details later. The market is open each Friday morning from 8.30a.m – 11.00a.m in the Market House.

Thank You: St. Columba’s GFC express sincere thanks to all who helped out at ‘The Laurels’ on Saturday last. Appreciation to the ladies for the catering. The refreshments went down a treat.
