AMG Community Games: It is a very busy week ahead with 3 County events taking place. Best of luck to all the children in our parish who will be participating in the County U14 Table Quiz, the County Swimming & County Talent competitions. 3 teams will take up the Table Quiz challenge on Thursday evening in The Park House in Edgeworthstown. All swimming participants will be notified during the week. They must be at the Mall Sports Complex on Saturday 16 March at 4:30pm. The County Talent competition will be held on Monday 18 March in Newtowncashel. Maryann Lynch, Adam Callan, Gareth Mulleady, Katie Quinn, Aisling Farrell & Katie Lynch have been rehearsing for group singing. Thanks to Riona Lynch for mentoring the singers as she has done for several years. Emily Doyle and Maryann Lynch will take on solo events. Thanks to all the parents who bring children back and forth and to the many parents behind the scenes who faithfully lend a hand so that all these opportunities can be offered to the children.
Girls U10 Indoor Soccer: Congratulations to the Girls U10 indoor soccer team Melissa O’Kane, Keeva Gillen, Anna Hayden, Sarah McPhillips, Laura Farrell, Katie Halpin, Saoirse McLoughlin, & Claragh Shannon who put up a great performance against the Meath champions Navan in the Leinster Quarter Final last Saturday. Fortunes swung both ways in a very exciting match and when the final whistle sounded the teams were tied 3 goals each. There was heartbreak for the AMG girls as Navan went on to score 2 goals in extra time which put them on top. Well done to all the girls, coaches and parents on a great campaign and on being great sporting ambassadors for County Longford Community Games.
U16 Chess: Commiserations to the Chess team who were defeated in their Leinster match vs Ratoath, Co. Meath last Sunday. William Smyth, Gareth Mulleady, Thomas Whyte, Adam Ryan, Dillon Ryan, Olivia Hoysted & Rebecca O’Kane were outplayed by a much stronger side. The Leinster standard for U16 chess is always very high so it was great for the team to get the experience playing at this level. Thanks to Martin Smyth & Transition Year student Shane Finnan for all the time they put into practicing with the team at Youth Club all winter, as well as Clare McCarrick for her training session. Special word of THANKS to Janice O’Kane who spent her Mother’s Day doing the catering for the chess competition, serving tea & sandwiches to the visiting team and parents. We really appreciate ALL our Community Games adult & TY Student volunteers who are so generous with their time coaching, supervising & baking for all the events that are run throughout the year.
Healthy Events 2013: We will be learning more about Healthy Eating and Physical Activity in the coming weeks. We plan to spend time having fun at Youth Club learning about warm up and cool down before/after activities so be sure to come on Friday evenings ready to move!
Connacht medals for Ardagh boys: 3 Ardagh boys: Johnny Finnan, Cian McPhillips and Brendan Finnan competed in the Connacht Indoor Athletics Championship in the fantastic new AIT Arena in Athlone last weekend. Over 1000 young athletes took part and with fifteen hundred spectators the atmosphere was electric. Cian and Brendan were first up as part of the Longford Athletic Club U12 boys relay team winning bronze. They only missing out on gold by just over a second. Cian then ran an incredible race in the boys U12 600 metres in a time of 1 minute 46 seconds, just one second outside the Irish record and a clear winner of the gold medal. Johnny was in the very competitive boys U16 60m where only a hundreds of a second separate the winners and losers. He ran a great heat to qualify for a very high class final but just missed out on a medal by a fraction of a second. He also ran U16 200m finishing 4th in his heat. Cian & Brendan will return to the AIT Arena in the next couple of weeks to compete in the All Ireland Juvenile Athletics Finals and we wish them the very best in those races. The Indoor races start at U12 so several other lads from Ardagh who all belong to the Longford Athletics Club were unable to participate as they are still underage for this competition. Look out for a very determined squad next year.
