TIDY TOWNS: The Tidy Towns effort is in full swing, with volunteers out around the town collecting any stray rubbish, tidying overhanging ivy, and residents and businesses providing window boxes and hanging baskets. A great deal of painting is in progress, as well as dealing with shrubs and hedges which are projecting over footpaths etc. FAS and County Council workers are hard at work in and around the town and the approach roads, and their efforts are much appreciated.
CRIME: There has been a spate of thefts and burglaries in and around the area over the recent weeks. When leaving home, ensure that windows and doors are properly secured, and that alarm systems, where fitted, are activated. Ensure that keys are secured away from open windows, and if possible are placed in drawers or cupboards out of sight. Make sure that high value, easily moved items like iPods, laptops, smart phones etc, are scured out of sight, whether at home or in your vehicle, and that vehicle alarms are also activated when leaving them for any reason. Check that sheds and outbuildings are secured, and that items such as lawnmowers, trailers, strimmers, hedgecutters, chainsaws and other high value equipment are securely locked away, or provided with antitheft devices. when dealing with unexpected callers, do not grant them access to your home. Establish what they want without opening your front door, simply by asking what they want, or by partially opening an adjacent window. Make a note of the description of the caller. If in doubt, contact the Gardai immediately, followed by family, friends and neighbours.
