There has been much speculation about the presence of a drilling rig in the townland of Cartronbrack over the past fortnight. The bore hole reached 400 feet last Friday when the operation ceased for the time being. The company involved were drilling for copper, zinc and lead and possibly even gold. So far nothing promising has turned up until further tests are made. The lands involved are the property of James Dooner. Could it be that Jim was sitting on a gold mine over the years without knowing about it.

The ploughing match which was held on Mulvihill’s farm at Lisaniskey last Sunday was a great success possibly the largest event of its type ever held in Co Longford. Summer like weather and an ideal site played a big part in making it one of the best ever. An estimated ten thousand people attended from all over Ireland. There was a record breaking number of contestants taking part , well over one hundred from many counties in Ireland. There were over sixty trade stands which was also a record. There was also a very successful dog show and a top class display of cattle and sheep which was a new attraction. There was also a great display of vintage tractors and ploughs alongside of about ten pairs of horses. Four horses from county Kildare working in tandem were a major attraction . The success of the ploughing match rested very much on the shoulders of a very hard working committee who left no stone unturned to make the event such a success.
