The results of the Tidy Towns Competition 2015 were published on Monday of last week. We are delighted to report that with the commitment and dedication of all concerned we received five marks more than in 2014. The adjudicators visited the area on Tuesday 21st July. The adjudicators were very impressed with the church and it’s surroundings. The gates at the church and graveyard got a special mention, as did the walkway adjacent to the GAA grounds. The schoolchildren were commended on carrying out the project on the history and wildlife of Derrycasson wood. Their participation in the Spring Clean in April was addressed. It was noted that the standard of house presentation was good and that we were saved the scourge of unfinished housing estates and abandoned derelict properties. Appreciation to all connected with the community employment scheme for their cooperation and all who helped in anyway. However it was identified where improvements could take place. Headless/signless road traffic poles in and around the village did not receive any favourable comment. Facilities at the community centre were admired. Nonetheless painting on part of it would enhance it’s appearance. It was recommended to draw up a plan for the betterment of the area. Proposals are welcome.

During this period John has visited every house in the area. Always obliging and with a smile for young and old John performed his duties away beyond the call of duty. Highly regarded by his colleagues and all he made contact we will all miss having a chat with him. On behalf of all in the area we wish John good health and happiness for the future.
