A group of Spanish students are hoping to attend a Summer Camp in Cnoc Mhuire, Granard from 4 - 24 July. This will be the first year for the camp in the Granard area and is an extension of the successful Moyne C.S. Summer Camp which has been running since 2011. St. Christopher’s Services
Volunteers wanted for the ‘Leisure Buddies Project’ in St. Christopher’s.
We are continuously recruiting for volunteers from around the county to give up their time once a month to befriend someone who attends St. Christopher’s and to meet up with them at a time that suits them both to attend a social activity of their choice. e.g. - going to the cinema; to the pub; a concert or just for a cup of tea and a chat. New volunteers are inducted and fully supported by staff. If you are interested in befriending anyone in St. Christopher’s please contact the Leisure Buddies co-ordinator Michelle on 086 4074988.

Granard Guild I.C.A. will hold their next meeting on Thursday, 4 June at 8pm in the Seminar Room of Granard Credit Union. Interesting guest speakers on the night. This is the final meeting before the Summer recess so all members are requested to attend. The guild are having their annual Summer outing on Thursday 18 July starting off in Athlone with a cruise on the Shannon to Clonmacnoise; return to Athlone for shopping followed by evening meal in Glasson. The club would like to congratulate the teams on winning the County Sporting League (Senior and Junior) on Sunday last in Edgeworthstown. Congratulations also to Charlie Martin and Sean Lynch who were winners of the Veteran Cup. The cups made their way to J.V.’s and O’Hara’s on Sunday evening where other members of the Gun Club helped to celebrate.
The EDI Centre in Longford is holding an Open Day at their premises at Mastertech Business Park, Athlone Road, Longford on this Thursday, 21 May from 12noon to 4pm. Why not go along and learn about the Training Courses available at the Centre and visit ReVamp 3R Store. All are welcome.
Congratulations to Longford Minors who had a win over Carlow on Friday evening of last week in Pearse Park Longford on a scoreline of Longford 1-14 to Carlow’s 1-9. Then on Saturday the seniors had a win over Offaly in the first round of the Leinster Championship. The Minors have a break now until after the Leaving Cert when they will play Meath on 27 June. The seniors will play Dublin in Croke Park on Sunday, 31 May. We wish them well in the next round.
Dedication of Organ
Following on from the Rededication of St. Mel’s Cathedral last Sunday, this Sunday 24 May at 8pm sees the dedication of the new Ruffatti Organ. The music used for the dedication of the Cathedral will also be used at this ceremony by the Cathedral choir followed by an Organ Recital by Dr. John O’Keeffe and Professor Gerard Gillen. All are welcome and the event is free of charge.
The death of Niall Enright, Carragh, Granard occurred at St. James’ Hospital Dublin on Saturday, 16 May. His body reposed at his home on Monday evening. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday in St. Mary’s Church, Carragh followed by burial in his native Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Sympathy is extended to Deirdre, son Trevor, daughter Jayne, grandchildren, daughter-in-law Edel, son-in-law Steve, his brothers, sisters; a wide circle of family and friends, especially Eleanor. May he rest in peace. Niall was instrumental in setting up Lite Pac together with John Reilly and later Enplast with his son Trevor giving valuable employment in the area. He was a very popular figure around town and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
The death of Molly Donaghy, (nee Brady), New York and formerly of Springtown, Granard occurred on 6 May last. Molly was sister of the late Tom, Brendan and Frank Brady of Springtown. Sympathy is extended to her sister Chris Brady in Gowna; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law nieces, nephews and extended family circle. May she rest in peace.
Stars in our Eyes
Saturday, 6 June in the Longford Arms Hotel commencing at 8.30pm when St. Mary’s G.A.A. are hosting a Stars in our Eyes evening. A great evening’s entertainment is guaranteed and your support will be very much appreciated.
The annual Open Air Festival in Dring due to be held on Sunday, 31 May has been postponed for this year. The annual church gate collection for St. Christopher’s will be held that weekend at both churches. We would like to thank all our loyal supporters and look forward to next year’s festival.
The market continues every Friday morning in the Motte Project Building, opposite Kearney’s garage from 8.30am to 1.00pm. Hanging baskets and planted containers are now in stock as well as the usual supply of bread, cakes, eggs, cards, crafts, firewood etc.
Granard Garden Club will hold their next monthly meeting on Monday night next 25 May at 8.00pm in Lus na Greine and the topic on the night is container planting. Deposits will also be taken on the night for our summer outing. This trip is to Johnstown Garden Centre in Naas and Newbridge Silverware on Tuesday 23 June. The cost is €20 and everyone welcome. On Sunday 31 May a will be held in the Breffni Arms Hotel in Arva starting at 6.00pm. This Classic is organised by friends of the late Martin Cadden and all proceeds go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund. All support will be welcome.
Northern Gaels the underage footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta are holding a novel fundraising event on Sunday, 31 May. A “Duck Race” will take place on the river at Derragh. Sponsor a duck for €5.00 and if your duck wins you will receive a valuable prize kindly sponsored by Cllr. P.J. Reilly. Your support will be appreciated.

Moatsider’s Active Retirement Group
Thanks to all who supported our recent Alzheimer’s Tea Morning. We had a lovely day on Tuesday 19 May in Granard Community Library with Futa Fata Company from Galway, this was a morning of folklore, music, and song. Our recent morning in the Library with the Sacred Heart Primary School pupils and Eamonn Brennan was most enjoyable and thanks to all concerned. Our next meeting date in Rath Mhuire will be Thursday 28 May at the usual time of 2.30pm. We always give a warm welcome to new members, so, if you would like to join us in any of our activities or events in the coming months, please get in touch.
Rath Mhuire Men’s Social Club
Next meeting dates is Tuesday 26 May – at 12.30pm – in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. The club provides a great space for lots of activities, trips as well as good company and good food. Currently the group are involved in Woodwork and Basket Making.
Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, 21 May at 7.30pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Martin Morris, Longford Library Archivist, will be attending the meeting looking at the Irish Folklore Commission project which took place in 1937. Over a period of 18 months primary school children throughout Ireland researched local history, collecting material mainly from their parents and grandparents and members of the local community regarding local tales, traditions, pastimes and much more. Martin will be bringing material in relation to the local schools and pupils in Granard Parish.

The open evening for the new Parish Centre for the people of the parish and friends will take place on Friday 29 May.
