Granard guild held their meeting on Thursday night last. Guest speaker was Ms Clerkin from the RSA who gave a very informative talk on Road Safety and provided us all with Hi Vis Jackets and stressed the importance of wearing these day and night when out walking or cycling. 6 members travelled to The Family Centre in Longford on Saturday evening 6 March to celebrate International Women’s Day. Each guild was given a country to research on women in Agri-business. Our guild researched Australia and had an impressive display. It was a most interesting project and Joy Burns gave a talk on the findings. Ms Sorcha Nic Mhathona from Oxfam gave a presentation on women in Sudan and other African countries and the challenges they face. Many of these women have set up successful businesses with the assistance of Oxfam and other charitable organisations.
The book Longford Women’s Voices published in 2007 by Granard Guild members Joy Burns Anne Donohoe Margot Gearty together with Gen Doherty Coolamber Guild and Stephanie Igoe Ennybegs Guild was launched as e book now available from Amazon. The evening finished with supper and a wonderful session of Traditional music provided by local lady musicians and special guest Noel Sweeney. Sympathy is extended to guild member Margot Gearty on the death of her brother Kevin Kiernan formerly of the Greville Arms Hotel Granard who died recently in Omagh. May he rest in peace.
