Parish Draw

Our Parish draw takes place tonight, Wednesday, 22 October in Abbeylara after the 7.30pm Mass. You are welcome to attend. Any monies due to the draw please hand in before the draw.

Temple Street Hospital

Temple Street Children’s University Hospital would like to express sincere thanks to Abbeylara Parish for collecting €460 at Masses on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September for them.

Temple Street Challenge

The event this year raised €30,000 for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. The two team Feely came in with €6,002 and came in at 9th Place overall which was a great result. They took home the Sophie Trophy as the Team that raised the highest Sponsorship this year. This is their 3rd time to take this trophy and it’s their 5th time back in Co. Longford in 7 years. David Jnr was presented with an award for dedication to the event as the only competitor to have competed in every 4x4 challenge to date. At this stage he is an important part of the event. This year like most years he was the 1st person to help anyone who had mechanical problems. He rescued a Toyota Jeep & its occupants from a mountain in Sligo when they broke down. The official photographer had steering problems with their Land Rover on the Saturday evening and David got them sorted. Overall this was a great achievement and well done to all involved!!

Country Markets

To celebrate Fiver Friday and Halloween, Granard Country Markets will hold a free draw for all customers on this Friday, October 24 at their weekly Market on upper Main Street. Orders are now been taken for Christmas cards, cakes and puddings etc.

Thanks

The chairperson and committee of the Granard branch of St.Chrstopher’s wish to sincerely thank all who supported their recently held fundraiser in Creegan’s in Bunlahy. Sincere thanks to Johnny and Molly Creegan and family and staff for their generosity and hospitality on the night and also to the brilliant band The Merchant Archers who gave a great performance. We also extend Thanks to all who donated prizes for the raffle and door prizes and to all committee members who sold the tickets and to all who bought them. Our thanks also go to those who supplied and cooked the beautiful burgers and to the huge crowd who attended on the night and made generous donations on the door. Well done to all involved and once again sincere thanks.

Active Group

New members welcome.  We offer our sympathies to the Reilly family, Cloughernal on the death of Paddy who died last Saturday, 11 October also to the O’ Reilly family, Renehan on the death of Eileen on Sunday last 12 October.  Both Paddy and Eileen were members of our Active Retirement. May they rest in peace.

Solemn Novena

The opening of St. Mary’s, Granard Novena will begin tonight, Wednesday 22 October at 7.30pm and will continue until Wednesday 17 December. This Novena is a time of reflection, petition, praise and thanksgiving. We invite you to be part of this great gift.

St. Mel’s Cathedral

Arrangements are currently being made for the opening weekend. We are pleased to open the building for public viewing and to celebrate Masses on the weekend before Christmas. Two of the Christmas Masses will be broadcast with the wider public courtesy of RTE Television; Midnight Mass and the 10.00am Mass on Christmas morning will be televised. Seating for all Masses will be on a first come first served basis. Congratulations to the many people who have worked tirelessly to restore the Cathedral after the devastating fire of Christmas 2009.

Children’s Voices

St. Mel’s Cathedral is delighted to announce a new initiative called ‘Cantate’. The Latin word meaning ‘Sing’, ‘Cantate’ brings together two new ventures; a School’s Singing Programme and a Young Chorister Programme. Currently, we would like to invite Boys & Girls in Third, Fourth and Fifth Class to get involved. An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office, Main Street, Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

Water Charges

Fancy Dress

In conjunction with the Christmas lights fundraising, the annual Halloween Fancy Dress will be held in the Boomerang Bar on Saturday, 25 October. There is a draw on the night with a total of €1000 in prizes some of which include the following: Best dressed man €100; Best dressed lady €100; and Best dressed Couple €100. Plus lots of spot prizes to be won including Dinner for Two in award winning restaurant Viewmount House Longford. Music will be held on the night and Tickets are currently on sale at €5 each. Business Expo

As you may know Granard has been chosen as an Enterprise Town for 2014 by Bank of Ireland. To celebrate Granard Traders Association and Bank of Ireland are holding a business and sporting Expo in Granard on 24 and 25 October. Business Expo will be held at the rear of “Fresh Today” Store, Edgeworthstown Road on 24 October. This will include exhibitions by local businesses and services also Arts & Crafts and our local schools. There will be a number of guest speakers. The Sporting Expo will be held at St. Mary’s Complex in Higginstown on 25 October – this will include all local sporting clubs: G.A.A.; Soccer; Pitch & Putt; Hurling; Gun Club; Badminton; Walking Club; Keep Fit Clubs. There will be exhibition games and guest speakers to include a number of sport stars and much more to be announced later. We are looking for people to participate in both the Business and Sporting Expos. There is no entry free to exhibit. Bingo

Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot is now €17,800. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early. IT COULD BE YOU!

Gallant 15K

Rainbows

A Rainbows Support Group for children experiencing loss through family separation or bereavement will be delivered in Lus Na Gréine, Family and Resource Centre, Granard at 6.00pm for 12 weeks, starting Tuesday, 4 November. Contact the Centre for details.

Takes place on Tuesdays in Lus na Gréine, Granard from 8.00pm to 10.00pm. Learn to jive, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, rock & roll, etc. €10 nightly.
