On Saturday last, Northern Gaels competed in two championship finals, both sponsored by Hanlon’s Gala, Dublin Road, Longford. First in action were the Under 12s facing Shannon Gaels in the Division 2 Cup Final. Aided by a strong wind in the first half Northern Gaels were much the stronger side and leading by 1-6 to 0-1 at the break supporters were optimistic of a victory. However on the resumption Shannon Gaels were a transformed side and took control of the game. Though our lads gave a wholehearted performance they were unable to get the vital scores against the wind. The South Longford side used this advantage to their benefit and took their scores to emerge victorious by five points on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-7. In the Minor A Final, Northern Gaels were pitted against old rivals Clonguish. On this occasion Clonguish had the aid of the strong breeze in the first half and were leading at the interval by 0-6 to 0-2. When proceedings resumed in a closely contested affair the lads in Green and Black gradually got their act together but due to some missed opportunities had to settle for a draw. Final score was 0-11 to 0-11. Replay will take place on this Saturday, 25th October. Please check fixtures for details.

Because the office base is being moved from Longford to Mullingar later in the year to amalgamate with Westmeath under the revised Transport Co-ordination Unit (TCU) it is vital that the existing 23 services in Longford are held on to. To do so it is imperative to have as close to maximum capacity as possible on all services, because if a service is lost , the chances of replacing it under present circumstances are minimal. Recently a number of regular / committed passengers have been lost through illness and indeed death. It is very much emphasized that all age groups are very welcome to travel on the RTP services. Since 2003 those services have been of immense support to local passengers and their families, also to local communities, shops and post offices. The services are contracted to local providers, again giving local employment in those areas.
