The Ray Flynn Mile
The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday 23rd August in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well a world record as part of an all-Irish 4*1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee Road, beginning at the roundabout and finishing at St. Mel’s Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be enterprise centre on the Ballinalee Road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford, that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 24th August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40s race and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles, and advanced registration is available through Evenbrite www.eventbrite.ie People who are registered to run in the marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.
The Royal Canal Heritage Week
As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism are hosting a heritage walk along the route of the Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr. Tom Murray, this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening 24th August.
Diocesan Pilgrimage To Knock
Bishop Francis Duffy will lead the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock on Sunday 7th September. Bus departs from Gowna at 9.45am, Mullinalaghta at 10.00p.m and Granard at 10.15a.m. Proceedings will get underway with confessions at 12.30p.m. Anointing of the sick will take place at 2.30pm. Mass with blessing of the sick will be celebrated at 3.00p.m. For the benefit of anyone wishing to travel by bus tickets are on sale at Cloonagh P.O at €16 each.
Places for the Super Summer Activity Camp this August are fast filling up. To book your child please contact Conor at 086 1984470, firstname.lastname@example.org or drop into the house for a form. Cost of the camp is only €50 per child for the entire week with the cost of additional siblings only €40. Camp 1 for for 4-7 year olds will run from Monday11th August to Friday 15th August. Camp 2 for 8-12 year olds will be held from Monday 18th August to Friday 22nd August. Do not hesitate to ask questions or make inquiries. All children are fully insured.
St. Columba’s G.F.C held their weekly lotto draw in The Angler’s Rest Thursday, 7th August. The winning numbers were 7, 22, 29, 30. with the jackpot of €5750 remaining intact. As part of their fundraising activities the local ladies football club are holding a weekly draw based on the bonus ball in the main draw of the national lottery. Sheets are on sale in the local post office or are available from any club member. Match the bonus ball in Saturday’s night main draw and you will earn yourself €20. Lines are just €2. Six monthly tickets are available for €50 by contacting Marie Matthews. Your support would be very much appreciated each week. The winning number on Saturday 2nd August was 37. Unfortunately there was not a winner. On Saturday number 9 came out of the drum with Kathy Madden, Bruce earning herself €20.
St. Columba’s GFC in conjunction with Longford Hospice will hold a 5km/ 10km run through Derrycassin Wood on Saturday, 30th August at 12 noon. Accurate course/chip timing will be an option for those wishing to avail of it. At the start of the race a chip is attached to your arm and your time is recorded. Chip entry fee is €15 and €10 for fun walkers. Registration will take place at entrance to the ‘’Laurels’’ beside Derrycassin Wood from 10.30a.m. Alternatively one can enter online at www.precisiontiming.net Refreshments will be served afterwards. Support would be very much appreciated. Please inform family and friends away from the area. There will be prizes for males, females and veterans.
