The Ray Flynn Mile
The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday, the 23rd August, in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well as a world record as part of an all-Irish 4*1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee Road, begining at the roundabout and finishing at St Mels Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be the enterprise centre on the Ballinalee road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford, that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday the 24th of August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40s race, and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles, and advance registration is available through Eventbrite, www.eventbrite.ie . People who are registered to run in the marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.
The Royal Canal Heritage Walk
As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism are hosting a heritage walk along the route of The Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in The Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening 26th August.
Family Fun Day
Was previously advertised for Sunday, 9th August will now be held on Sunday, 31st August as an end of summer celebration for the children. Volunteer helpers and ideas for the day are required. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Events will kick off at 3pm at the pitch with a duck race to follow up at the bridge at 6pm. Lines will be on sale for the duck race around the village at €5 each. All proceeds go towards costs associated with the development of the playground.
Numbers drawn are 3, 10, 17 and 25. 1 x €60 Maura McElvaney. Sellers prize: Pat Devine. Draw for the month of August will take place in Rawle’s every Monday at 9pm. Jackpot €10,000.

Congratulations to Paddy Condron, son of George and Anna Whitehill and Michelle Crosson, daughter of Gordon and Maureen, who recently got married in St. Michael’s church, Bornacoola. The celebrants at the ceremony were Fr. O’Brien and Fr. Brennan. Chief bridesmaid was Lorraine Farrar, Maggie Rowley was bridesmaid, Louise Kelly was junior bridesmaid, while Nicole Condron, Caraghlee and Deirine Farrar were flowergirls. Ciaran Conlon was best man, while James Condron and Owen Kelly were groomsmen. The reception was in the Landmark and the night was filled with laughter, fun and dancing to the sound of Busy Fingers and DJ Ken. Wishing Paddy and Michelle all the very best in the future.
Well done to Sean Connolly’s in their last game of the Intermediate championship as they secured a good win over Kenagh in Stonepark last Saturday. They play Legan Sarsfields this Saturday. Check fixtures list for venue. Well done lads!
