The towns Traders are busy getting ready for Heritage Week, 23rd to 30th August. They will have a traditional market, Parade, Busking Competition and other activities on Saturday 30th. It would be lovely to see all premises decorated heritage style for the week. If anyone has any interesting photos or items they would like included, please contact a member of the B.T.A. They are also calling on all local musicians to come out and take part in the busking competition. There’s lots of talent around Ballymahon. They are hoping that every business in the town will be represented in this. So start auditioning your family, friends neighbours, staff and customers. All types of acts welcome. If you want a stall on the day, please download a form from the Traders Facebook page and submit it to Jenny White.

The Ray Flynn Mile

The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday the 23rd August, in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish Record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well as a world record as part of an all-Irish 4x1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee road, beginning at the Roundabout and finishing at St. Mel’s Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be the Enterprise Centre on the Ballinalee road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford, that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 24th August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40’s Race and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles and advance registration is available through Eventbrite www.eventbrite.ie. People who are registered to run in the Marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.

The Royal Canal Heritage Walk

As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism are hosting a Heritage Walk along the route of the Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr. Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in The Richmond Inn, Clondra. The Walk starts at 7.30p.m. on Tuesday evening, 26th August.

Day Care Centre

Ballymahon Day Care Centre has closed for the month of August for the holiday season. The Centre will re-open on Monday, 1st September. We hope you all have an enjoyable break.

Journalism Course

Longford Women’s Link (LWL) are planning on running a Journalism Course in September 2014. The Course will run over 10 weeks, on Wednesday nights between Sept 24th and November 26th. It will appeal to men and women alike and will cover Journalism, Use of Language, News reporting, Compiling and Editing Newsletters, Interviewing skills etc. For more information on the course, which is limited to 12 participants, please contact Pamela Latimer, Education and Training, Business Development Manager,LWL. Pilgrimage

A bus will be travelling to Mellery Grotto on 16th August and will pick up passengers from this area in Edgeworthstown at 5.15p.m. To book a seat please contact Anna Brady at 049-4336291 or 087-2549460.

Bus to Knock

A bus will travel to Knock Shrine for the annual Novena on Thursday, 14th August at 5p.m. from the centre of town. This is earlier than usual due to road works on the way. If you wish to travel please contact Sr. Vincent at 09064 32532 or Ita at 04493 57589.

Social night

Ballymahon senior football team are having a BBQ in Cooneys Hotel on Saturday, August 18th. Tickets are available from Club members at €5 each. There will be spot prizes and music on the night. The BBQ will be served from 7.30pm. Please support. Everyone welcome.

History Group

Ballymahon Leo Casey History Group and Ballymahon Traders Association are planning a very comprehensive Programme for Heritage Week which runs from August 24th to Saturday 30th August. The programme will include a Vintage Window display which will run for the whole week. It will also include a Parade at 3pm, a High Nellie Bike Run, Vintage Cars, Horse drawn vehicles, Busking on the Street all day, a Craft Display and much more. People who have any of the fore mentioned modes of transport are invited to take part. Those people who practice craft work are also invited to come and take part. The High Nellie Bike Run will cover a three mile circuit via Drinan and Brannigan Bridge. It is not necessary to have a Vintage bike, if you have any type of cycle, please come along and take part. We will have more details next week.

Blood Donation Clinic

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service are holding their Blood Donation clinic in Athlone this week, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th at The Shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone from 4.30pm to 8pm. You must be over 18 years of age, over 50kg and have not donated blood within the last 90 days.

Death of Noel Gunning

It was with deep regret that we learnt of the tragic death on August 2nd last following a house fire at his home of Noel Gunning, Jordanstown, Ballynacargy, Co Westmeath. A regular visitor to Ballymahon, Noel was well known in the area, he was a quiet and inoffensive gentleman, popular with everyone. He is survived by his heartbroken mother, Mary, his brothers Michael, Raymond and Declan, sister Teresa, relative, neighbours and many friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy at this sad time. May his Soul rest in peace.

Welcome home

To Mrs Babs McPartland who is over from Coventry, England staying in her holiday home in Ballymulvey together with her daughter Shirley and Paul. We hope they enjoy their stay here.

Junior football

Hard luck to Ballymahon Junior football team who were narrowly beaten by Killashee on Monday of last week at Leo Casey Park in the Junior Championship.

Death of Mr William Nolan

The death occurred on 6th August of Mr. William Nolan, Cannistown, The Pigeons in the loving care of the staff of Auburn Unit, St. Vincent’s Care Centre, Athlone. William was a grand, quiet gentleman, a highly respected member of the local community all around The Pigeons area and further afield. He was a regular visitor into Ballymahon and enjoyed having a chat with the locals. Williams remains were laid to rest at Drumraney Cemetery following his Funeral Mass in Tang at the weekend. We offer our deepest sympathy to his cousins, his kind carers, good neighbours and friends. May his soul rest in peace.

Hospice Fundraiser

A fundraiser in aid of South Westmeath Hospice, St. Christophers, Longford and also the Irish Cancer Society will be held in The Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule on Friday, 15th August with music provided by P.J. Murrihy. Heats of Waltzing and Jiving Competition will take place on the night. Dancing from 10p.m. to 1p.m. Admission €10. Tickets are available from Willie Foxe, Mary Flanagan and Tom Farrell or pay at the door on the night.

Welcome home

To the Twinning group from the area who travelled over to Landevant/Landaul in France last week where they stayed with their host families for a few days. We hope they all enjoyed their trip.

Welcome home

To Roisin Kean, (nee Reilly), Cloncallow who has been home from Boston visiting her parents Donal and Mai and all her family in the area. We hope Roisin enjoyed her holiday.

Graduation Dance

Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School held their Graduation Ball on Thursday night last which was held in the Newgrange Hotel, Co Meath. We hope all the young students enjoyed their big night.

Engagement

Congratulations to Michael Lloyd, Forgney, son of Michael and Bridgie who got engaged to Jennifer Stewart, daughter of Keith and Daphne, Colehill last week. We wish Michael and Jennifer the best of luck for the future.
