There was much regret locally on the occasion of the death of Bennie Shiels, Kilsarn recently. Deceased who was in his early 70’s was a member of a hardworking and industrious family and as one of the local handymen, he could turn his hand to any job. Having spent some years in England, he returned to his native parish and for many years he worked in core with the late Jimmy (Dinkie) Donohoe cutting and selling timber over a wide area. Sadly, local labourers of Benny’s ilk are a fast dying breed in rural areas as machinery and qualified technicians abound. Benny had been ill for only a few weeks before he passed away and he will be sadly missed by his brothers Sonny, Phil and Michael, nieces and nephews, neighbours and friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. The funeral Mass was celebrated by Canon Owen Devaney and burial took place from St. Joseph’s Church, Loughduff to local cemetery. May he rest in peace.
While the county senior team didn’t shine this year, the juniors quietly have made it to an All Ireland final when they defeated Scotland in Edinburgh at the weekend. Man of The Match was local clubman, Enda Reilly who scored a total of 1-5 and with this score he would have won the game on his own! Well done, Enda and the lads and we look forward to meeting Kerry in Croke Park in the near future. Meanwhile, we wish the best of luck to Mullahoran in the first round of the Championship this Friday evening against Lavey in what should be a hard battle and the lads will need to be at their best to win.
