The John Dungan Granard and the Joe Callaghan Edgeworthstown Branches of Comhaltas wish all their members taking part in the All-Ireland Fleadh Ceoil in Sligo next week every success in the competitions. The annual Fleadh takes place from 10 – 18 August.
Granard Country Markets continue each Friday morning from 8.30am to11.00am beside the Post Office. Fresh vegetables in stock along with the usual supply cakes bread buns eggs crafts and firewood. St Mary’s GFC have organised a Heart Screening session for players, members etc at clubhouse in Higginstown on Saturday the 16th August. This cost is €65 per person and can be booked by ringing 1890 300333 or by logging onto www.heartaid.ie. Appointments start at 9.30am and end at 4.45pm, so book as soon as possible to get a suitable time. We hope to see as many of our players as possible taking part in this very important medical check. The cost of this may be covered by your health insurance so check your policy. Nearly 100 young people die from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome every year and the GAA Medical Scientific and Welfare Committee recommend heart screening for all players over the age of 14 years.
Congratulations to Barbara McElvaney, Coolarty and popular teacher at Cnoc Mhuire who came first in the Ladies section of the Breffni Challenge last week and to Tom Donnelly, Granard who came first in the men’s section. Well done also to Johnny Macken Snr. who completed the Cycle Run for the 12th time. Sponsorship from the event went to St. Luke’s Hospital Dublin; NBCRI Galway; Cavan Monaghan Cancer Homecare Association. To date the event has raised in excess of €900K for cancer research and after last week end there should be a substantial amount more raised. Well done to everyone who makes the effort to fundraise for these worthy causes.
The group made their first trip to Edenderry Golf Course, warm welcome, sunshine and good food was the order of the day! Our chairman, Seamus Finnan, was the top man on the fairways in the tight, picturesque golf course. 1st Overall: Seamus Finnan; Runner up: Leon Fagan; 19+: Brendan Kiernan; Longest Drive: John Keegan; Nearest the Pin: Colm Fagan; Team: Ned Monaghan, Brendan Kiernan and Jimmy Finnan. The next outing was on Saturday 9 August, at Newforest and a most enjoyable day was had by all. Deposits are currently being taken for weekend away to Greenore and Ballymascanlon Hotel and Golf Course from 18th-19th October next.
The Ray Flynn Mile The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday 23 August in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well as a world record as part of an all-Irish 4x1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee Road, beginning at the roundabout and finishing at St Mel’s Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be the enterprise centre on the Ballinalee road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday the 24 August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40s race and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles, and advance registration is available through Eventbrite. www.eventbrite.ie . People who are registered to run in the marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.
The Royal Canal Heritage Walk As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism is hosting a heritage walk along the route of The Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in The Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening 26 August.
Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard commencing at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot is now €16,700.

Happy Hearts Walking Club
Walking continues as usual every Monday evening, meeting at Higginstown Sports Complex at 7pm. A new route every Monday. New members welcome young and old.

New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s clothes all sizes. Beautiful jewellery to finish off that special outfit also shoes and sandals. Books are clearing at 50 cent each. Due to popular demand the shop is now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. All proceeds from the shop go directly and totally to projects in the area.

Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual Ardagh and Clonmacnois Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday, 7 September. Ceremonies begin at 2.30pm with the Anointing of the Sick and Mass will be celebrated at 3.00pm. A Benefit /Fundraising night with raffle for Hamper and numerous other prizes will take place in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara on Saturday 13 September. The event is aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital and all proceeds go directly to the Hospital. Entertainment on the night with Mary O’Connor. Your support will be appreciated.

An open information evening on the Rainbows Support Programme for children experiencing loss through bereavement or family separation will take place on 16 September at 7.30 pm. in Lus na Greine FRC, Main Street, Granard. This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and others to learn about the benefits of the programme. A Rainbows Programme for children will commence in November and run for six consecutive Tuesdays from 6pm – 7pm concluding in January, 2015. For further details contact Irene on 085 1159289.
‘Family Matters’ with Dr. Brian McClean an informative and enjoyable workshop/talk on positive family in 2014 will be delivered in Lus na Greine FRC on 10 September at 7 pm. This is a free event and is open to all.

Granard Visitor Centre Project
Due to holidays, we had no public meeting this month. Instead we held our July Draw at our committee meeting held on Tuesday last under the watchful eye of Garda Syl Keane, Granard Garda Station. Youth 2000 Festival
The annual Youth 2000 Summer Festival takes place from 14 to 17 August at the Cistercian College Roscrea Co. Tipperary. The festival is aimed at young people aged 16-35. It is an opportunity to experience the Catholic faith and meet new people. The festival has been nicknamed the “Holy Oxygen” with young people from all corners of Ireland attending.
