All roads lead to Abbeylara for the annual Field Day that takes place on this Sunday 8 June with the usual Tractor Pulling events; Vintage car displays; Threshing Demonstration; Midget Car Racing in association with Motorsport Ireland; Ladies and Gents Tug ‘O’War; Best dressed lady competition; Fun Fair and many other side shows. Citizens Information

The service continues at the offices of Granard Area Action Group each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you require information on any aspects of your rights and entitlements please call in and the Information Officer will deal confidentially with your query. The service is free to all.

The final meeting before the summer recess takes place on this Thursday, 5 June in the Credit Union meeting room at 8pm. All members are encouraged to come along and new ones will be most welcome. Anyone with outstanding membership fees are requested to bring them to this meeting also those who expressed interest in going to An Grianan Garden Party in July please note that €55.00 is due at this meeting. Details of the Co. Longford Heat of the Brown Bread competition sponsored by Aldi will place in Keenagh later this month more information at meeting.

Sacred Heart NS

Congratulations to everyone in Sacred Heart Primary School for achieving the Digital Schools’ Award and earning Digital School Status. They are the first school in County Longford to achieve this honour. The Digital Schools’ Award is an initiative which recognises excellence in a school’s approach to the integration of ICT into learning and teaching. In Sacred Heart Primary School, every class has a computer, printer facilities, high speed broadband, interactive whiteboards, an iPad as well as having access to a wide range of assistive technologies, software and programmes in to order to maximize teaching and learning. All classes are connected through a high speed computer network and server. The school blog and twitter account is updated regularly and is expanding all the time. ICT is integrated into a wide range of curricular areas and across all class levels and abilities and greatly assists the teaching and learning of pupils in Sacred Heart school. In achieving the award the school receives A HP laptop with Microsoft software including Windows 8, software and educational apps, wall plaque and certificate. It further allows the school to be part of national and international projects such as the Open Discovery Space (ODS Academies) Portal and Web 2.0 tools and open educational resources (OER). Congratulations to the school Principal, staff and pupils on their prestigious award. Congratulations in particular goes to Mr. Francis Gray, 6th class teacher who spearheaded this initiative.

Buttermarket

The Restoration Committee of the Buttermarket held their AGM on Tuesday, 20 May 2014 in the newly refurbished Town Hall/Community Library. The following officers were elected: Chairperson: Helen Donnelly; Vice Chairperson: Sean Howard; Secretary/PRO: Nancy Carr; Treasurer: Evelyn McLoughlin; Assistant Treasurer: Maura Kilbride Harkin. The gates have been removed from the site of the Buttermarket and are being restored at Creamer’s Ironworks. The site has been secured by the Community Employment participants with Granard Area Action Group Limited. The funding for this part of the project was granted under the Heritage Maintenance Fund. Further work will be done if we are successful in obtaining funding under the Public Area Enhancement scheme and Local County Council. According to maps information the vacant Buttermarket site was listed in 1836 and identified as a Buttermarket in 1911 and in it’s current condition since 2008. The site is located on Market Street, Granard beside the Ulster Bank. The committee are anxious to see the project being completed.

Rath Mhuire & Dolmen Services

We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to all those who attended our concert last Sunday evening, it was marvellous to see a packed Church and we truly hope everybody enjoyed their evening. Thanks goes to all our wonderful musicians and artists and the very many people who supported us in so many ways, in promoting the concert, selling tickets and helping out on the evening. All proceeds are guaranteed to go to Rath Mhuire & Dolmen Resource Services, for our work in the local community with older people at Rath Mhuire Centre & Dolmen Centre.

Moatsider’s Active Age

Our next meeting will take place on this Thursday, 5 May at 2.30pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. We will be organising and planning our upcoming outings to Knock, Strokestown House and our trip to Galway. Pitch and Putt

Competitions continue on Wednesday evenings for all members – adults and juveniles and new beginners at 7pm. Those competitions will continue for the rest of the Summer months weather permitting. Anybody who is not a member must pay green fees €5 per day for adults and €2 for Juveniles. New 2 U

The SVP Shop situated at Market Street Granard is open each Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm. The shop is also open on the first Tuesday of the month from 10am to 5pm. Bargains galore with something for everyone.

Monster Auction

St Mary’s G.A.A. will be holding an Auction in Higginstown on the 22 June to raise funds for the running of the club and teams from U8 to senior level. We are requesting all our players, members, supporters, friends and anyone else who wishes, to donate any items they are no longer want or use to our club. We will auction off these items on the 22 June with all proceeds going to help with the running expenses. A number of items have already been promised, like furniture, pictures, plants, books, CD’s, garden equipment etc. Items like bed linen and mattresses can not be accepted. Anyone interested in donating anything for this auction can contact any member of our club with details of the item or email us at stmarysmonsterauction@gmail.com . More information will be made available on club’s Facebook page, notice board in the clubhouse and posters placed around the area.

CD Launch

Granard Writers group launched their CD “Beneath the Moat” on Thursday night last in the New Library building. Co. Librarian Mary Carleton Reynolds welcomed all present and complimented the group on their achievements. Local poet Noel Monahan performed the launch and complimented the writers group which is the longest running group in the county founded in 1987 and based at Rath Mhuire Resource. It was a most enjoyable occasion with music; song and readings from the CD. Excerpts from “Diary of a Town” written by Noel Monahan were performed by Sr. Maeve Brady; Margot Gearty; Tom Pettit and Martin Sheridan and enjoyed by the large audience. Refreshment were served afterwards. Let’s hope this is first of many enjoyable evenings in this magnificent refurbished building.

The next First Friday/Saturday Reparation and Adoration vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary is in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on this Friday the 6 June commencing at 10 pm with the Rosary and confession. Siopa Lus Na Greine

Drop in your cast offs, bric-a-brac to us at the Siopa or to the Centre, everything accepted and welcomed. New stock arriving weekly, ladies, gents and children’s, all sizes. Beautiful jewellery to finish off that special outfit also shoes and sandals. Books are clearing at 50 cent each. Due to popular demand the shop is now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am to 5pm. All proceeds from the shop go directly and totally to projects within the community.

Walking Club

We will resume again on Monday next 9 June meeting as usual at Higginstown Sports Complex at 7pm. We will start off our away walks and head to Derrycassin Woods. Looking forward to seeing all our walkers out old and new everyone welcome.

Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot this week is €15,900.

The aim of this free confidential service is to provide information on local activities and services available to older people as well as an opportunity for a friendly chat. If you are feeling lonely or isolated and you would like someone to talk to, this is the service for you. 5K Walk/Run

The Parents Association of St. Patrick’s N.S. Killeen is holding a 5K walk/run fundraiser on Sunday, 15 June at 12pm. Starting from McElvaney’s Pub Coolarty. Registration will take place at McElvaney’s from 10.30am. Cost €10 per adult. €5 per child or €20 per family. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Your support would be appreciated.

Community Playschool

On Sunday, 29 June, the committee of Granard Community Playschool have organised a fundraising event in Higginstown Complex. A Fun Walk with Fancy Dress around the walkway. Time 1pm to 3pm. Admission is €10.00 per family. Your support will be appreciated.

Recent deaths

The death of Roseann Kiernan, College View Nursing Home, Cavan and late of Springlawn House, Granard, occurred peacefully on Thursday, 29 May. Her body reposed at her late residence Springlawn House on Friday and Saturday. Removal took place to St. Mary’s Church, Granard on Sunday for concelebrated funeral Mass at 3pm followed by burial in Granardkille old cemetery. May she rest in peace. Predeceased by her husband Tommy. Sympathy is extended to her daughters Margaret, Bridie and Rosie; sons Syl Thomas and John; brother Pat Cooke; grandchildren; great grandchildren; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law extended family circle and many friends especially May Fanning.

Sympathy

Sympathy is extended to Aiden Scanlon and family, Carrickduff, Granard on the death of Aiden’s mother, Mrs Ena Scanlon, Plunkett Ave, Boyle who died on 29 May. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to Kitty Conaty, Cloncovid, Kilcogy on the death of her sister-in-law, Jessie Kilarney, Brentwood, Essex on 30 May. May she rest in peace.

A Floral Odyssey: The 11th World Flower Show “A Floral Odyssey is being held in the RDS Dublin, from 18 to 22 June 2014. If enough people are interested we will organise a bus and tickets for one of the days as there is a discount for groups.
