The monthly meeting of Granard Guild will take place on this Thursday, 7 November at 8pm in the Credit Union meeting room. Patrons of the Country Markets in Granard are asked to please take note that the Market has moved from the Community Centre as and from this Friday 8 November. The market will now be held in Gerry Kiernan’s premises on Upper Main Street between the Post Office and Kiernan’s Butchers from this Friday. The market starts at 8.30am and continues until 11.00 am. Congratulations to Granard based Gardai James Rowan and Padraic McWeeney who were presented with Bronze medals for saving a woman from the river Shannon at Tarmonbarry in August 2010. Mr Sean Barrett the Cean Comhairle presented the awards at the Deeds of Bravery Awards ceremony on Friday 1st November in Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park Dublin.
Tickets are now available for our annual Christmas draw to be held on Friday 20 December in J.V. Donoghoe’s Bar. Your support will be appreciated. The club wishes a speedy recovery to fellow member Christopher (Christo) Connell who is in Tullamore Hospital at present following major surgery.
Launch of Feasibility Study
Recently retired Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois Bishop Colm O’Reilly will officially launch the feasibility study recently completed on the project to purchase the NAMA owned property at Rathcronan and create a Visitor Centre for the area. The event will take place on Tuesday evening next 12 November at 8pm in the Community Centre, Barrack St. Granard. Other speakers will include RTE correspondent for the Midlands, Ciaran Mullooly. This will be an interesting and informative event and everyone is invited to attend.
The annual novena to prepare for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception continues each Wednesday evening in St. Mary’s Church Granard at 7.30pm. This solemn novena is well established now and everyone is encouraged to make an effort to attend for as many nights as possible.
An information officer from Co. Longford Citizen’s Information Service will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Information Office Main Street every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
The Mulligan Sisters will perform Operatic and Sacred Arias along with Musical Theatre favourites in concert at the Church of St. Camillus, Killucan Co. Westmeath on Saturday 30 November at 8p.m. Tickets €10 available at the door.
Local History Group
There has been a very good response regarding interest in setting up a local history group and a meeting will be arranged in mid November having confirmed what time and dates are most suitable to people. Dolmen Centre Aughnacliffe

As part of our Community Festive Celebrations and Gathering 2013 the Christmas Lights committee are hosting a Christmas Market on Sunday 8 December on Upper Main Street Granard. All surrounding local businesses are invited to come together in these challenging times to promote their seasonal wares in traditional market style. The Christmas Market is being incorporated with the switching on of the Christmas lights in the town. There will be the unique live crib and stationary crib also. Street Children of India
Sincere thanks to everyone who supported the recent fundraiser for the Street Children of India fund in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara. Thanks to Josie for accommodating the event to Mary O’Connor for supplying the music and to everyone who donated prizes for the draw and raffle on the night. A total of €1555 was raised for this very worthy cause.

At a recent meeting of the Granard Happy Heart Walking Club it was agreed to continue to meet at Higginstown Sports Complex at 10.15am on Saturday mornings. Walks will be kept local - no travelling involved and the duration is 1 hour approx. Again it was stressed that all paces are catered to, set your own stride. This is an enjoyable outing not a competitive one and not a race. New members male and female and all ages are welcome. See you.
