St Patrick’s Arva GAA Club: Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night 14th January. The Jackpot was €2550 – Numbers drawn were 4 / 14 / 26 / 29. No winner. €50 winners – John Hamilton, Tycusker. Arthur Mc Cabe, Corlisbratten. Brian Ellis, Drumnawall. The Draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday night 21st January. The Jackpot was €2600 – Numbers drawn were 15 / 19 / 20 / 25. No winner. €50 winners – Danny Calders, Tycusker. John Hamilton, Tycusker. Michelle Ellis, Drumalt. The Lotto Jackpot on Monday last 29th January was €2650. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. League: The All County Football League starts in Cavan on Sunday 17th February but Arva have a bye in that round. They will play Templeport in Michael Cully Park on Sunday 24th February at 2.00 pm. There are 20 games in this year’s Division 3 League so gaining promotion will be a difficult job for any team. There will be 10 home and 10 away games – plenty of action with hopefully a few Championship games also. The players are training on Fridays and Sundays in preparation for the start of the league.
Membership: Arva GAA Club membership is now due and all players in particular should ensure they have paid before they start training as they would not be covered by the Player Injury Scheme. For information contact the Secretary on 087 6794 215.
Arva Ladies GFC: Training Continues in St Patrick’s Hall every Saturday at 11.00 am sharp. New players welcome(U10 -U16). Registration after training (12pm) on Saturday only. Benefit Dance: Following the destruction of their family home due to a fire the Arva Football Club are holding a Benefit Dance for the Brady Family on Saturday of next week - 9th February in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex. Club members are out selling tickets for the function and donations may also be made to the St Patrick’s G.A.A. No 2 Account or by contacting Cyril Sheridan, Arthur Mc Cabe, Niall Brady and in Arva Post Office. Music on the night will be provided by the ever popular Night Fever with Ríl Óg and Gold Smith providing support.
Mouth Guards: All parents are reminded that Mouth Guards are compulsory for all children playing Gaelic Games up to 18 years of age from 1st January this year. They will be compulsory for all players from next year. Children will not be allowed to participate in games or training without Mouth Guards.
NFL: Cavan begin their Allianz National Football League campaign with a tough away outing in Casement Park, Belfast on this Sunday 3rd February where they will play Antrim. The game is timed for 2.00pm and all support will be much appreciated by the team as they begin what we hope will be a long year ahead.
Church Services: for the Arva Church of Ireland Parish Group – Sunday 3rd February – Holy Communion Service at 10.00 am in Columbkille and Carrigallen and at 11.30 am in Gowna and Arva.
New Roof: Arva Parish Church needs a new roof and the committee are presently fundraising for this purpose. A fundraising Dance will be held in Breffni Arms hotel Arva on Friday 22 February at 9pm. Tickets €10 or you can pay on door. We encourage everyone in the community to support this worthy venture. It is a beautiful building and every effort must be made to keep it in good condition.
First Friday: This Friday 1st February the Sick and Housebound will be visited at the usual times in the Arva and Coronea areas. Friday is also the Feast of St Brigid and anyone with the traditional St Brigid’s Crosses can have them Blessed at the 10.00 am Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva. Saturday 2nd February is the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord / Candlemas Day when Candles are Blessed for Church and Home use. Sunday 3rd February is the Feast of St Blaise, Bishop and Martyr when Throats are Blessed. As the Feast day falls on Sunday the traditional Blessing of Throats will take place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Coronea, on Friday evening following 8.00 pm Mass - in the Sacred Heart Church, Arva on Saturday following 7.00 pm Mass and in St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra following 7.30 pm Mass on Monday.

Motor Neurone Disease: The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association annual Church Gate collection in County Cavan was taken up last weekend and in Arva it amounted to €431-18. Your generous support in these difficult times is very much appreciated.

Festival: The Arva 3 Province Festival will be held from the 26th July to 5th August 2013. In conjunction with the Gathering Ireland 2013 it is hoped to bring family and friends home to Arva and showcase what the area has to offer. Further details will follow in the coming weeks.
1st Friday: The usual First Friday meeting will take place on this Friday 1st February with Soup and Sandwiches in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex following the 10.00 am Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva. The committee are looking forward to greeting all their regular members and new members will be especially welcome. Members are requested to bring their suggestions for the Summer Break
Bingo: The weekly Bingo sessions recommence on Sunday next 3rd February in St Patrick’s Hall, Arva following a six month sojourn in Carrigallen. All the usual prizes on offer and the committee are looking forward to welcoming all their old friends back to Arva. Eyes down at 8.30 pm.
Aromatherapist: M.s Jean Goode will be coming to The Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex, Arva at 6.45pm on Monday 25th February to demonstrate the benefits of Oils etc. to the Senior Citizens Club. Make a note of the date as this is something not to be missed.
Table quiz: Arva Agricultural Show Society are running a Fundraising Table Quiz on this Friday 1st February in The Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex, Arva at 9.00 pm and are hoping for the support of the entire community. In the present climate sponsorship is more difficult to obtain as the committee strive to keep up their normal high standards
Dancing Classes: Will take place in the Resource Centre, Killeshandra from Tuesday 15th January from 3.30pm to 4.30 pm. Classes are instructed by the highly successful dancing school Ard-Rialla O’ Donoghue , all boys and girls aged 4 and upwards are most welcome”.
St Christopher’s Hospice: The hilarious play “For Club and County” by Seamus O’ Rourke was staged in the Breffni Arms Hotel and Leisure Complex, Arva on Friday night with a good attendance. The proceeds are in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan.
Sympathy: Is extended to Mrs Kathleen Ellis, Drumalt, Arva on the death of her brother Mr Peter Kiernan, Legga, Moyne which occurred on Saturday 19th January at Cavan General Hospital. Following Requiem Mass in Legga Church burial took place in Moyne Cemetery.
Special Abilities: Do you have a child with special abilities? Is he/she interested in drama? If so, contact Deirdre on 085 1555076 for more information. Deirdre is a Drama Facilitator hoping to start drama workshops for children and adults with special abilities in Cavan (not just the town but a few different venues depending on numbers). The venues are not confirmed as yet but will obviously depend on the interest shown.

Sale of Work: will take place in St Patricks Hall, Arva on Friday 12th / Saturday 13th April in aid of the Arva Senior Citizens Club with a donation going to St Vincent de Paul and Trócaire. All donations of good second hand cloths, Toy’s, Book’s, Bric a Brac, small furniture in good condition, etc will be gratefully accepted. If required these can be collected anytime from now on. Unfortunately this year they cannot accept second hand televisions due to Saor View and no second hand mattresses.
