EUCHARISTIC BELL: The Eucharistic Congress will take place in June 2012. The Congress Bell is in the Diocese for one week. This tour will come to an end with a visit of the bell to Ardagh next Sunday 24th July. It will be handed over to us on the Green in Ardagh village near the ruins of St Mel’s Cathedral. This ceremony will take place at 10.30am. After a short welcoming prayer service we will go in procession with the bell to St Brigids Church for the celebration of the Eucharist. So instead of going directly to the Church first please assemble at the Green in Ardagh village at 10.30am. It is hoped that as many people as possible will be present for his unique celebration. The tradition of using bells is a very ancient one in the church. Bells were used in the catacombs in Rome;St Patrick used a bell in his preaching ; bells were used at times of funerals since the 8th century; we still use bells a the Eucharist to call people to pray and at times of joy and sorrow. The theme of the Eucharistic congress next year is Communion with Christ and with one another. The Holy Father Pope Benedict chose the theme.
