Lanesboro/Ballyleague May 13

Greatest initiative ever for Longford - In what, in my mind, the greatest ever initiative for Longford County a number of local business leaders with connections within the county or with family ties to the county have launched Longford Business Angels Network. No superlatives can be high enough for each of the 20 members that have pledged €50,000 each to make up a fund of €1 million which is aimed at creating jobs in Longford County.

The courage and dedication of these 20 people has to commended and supported in whatever way possible. Longford needs an injection of entrepreneurs with business plans and ideas to avail of funding from this fund. If you are one of those people that are looking to locate or have new business ventures in mind that can be based in County Longford you should contact the Longford Business Angels Network

Many congratulations to each and every member of the network and may their inventiveness be individually rewarded a million times over. They are people of courage, conviction and have the best interests of our county at heart and they deserve the support and admiration of everyone.

In order to encourage and support potential entrepreneurs to come forward and seek the significant seed capital available, a free seminar day will be held in Longford on 30th May, 2011 at which Sean Gallagher, entrepreneur and famous for his performances in the popular RTÉ programme Dragon’s Den, will also be on hand to provide his invaluable advice and assistance.

This is a tremendous opportunity for any local person with sustainable project to present it to the Angels with the hope that they will be able to avail of the available funding.

Lough Ree AC

Competition in Track & Field athletics has really come in with a bang! Ten days ago there was the Roscommon championship for the U9, U10 and U11 age groups in Lanesboro. Since then the Parish of Rathcline had its annual Community Games on Tuesday last and the Kilgefin Parish – Ballyleague had their Community Games on Sunday at St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds.

The Primary Schools Sports Day which always unearths new talent will take place on this Wednesday, weather permitting. If this is not enough competition, a new two county fixture Longford and Roscommon is set for the tartan track at Athlone IT on this Thursday evening for the U12 age group and upwards. Is this not too much too soon!

Looking back on last week’s notes we find that Anthony Jordan’s results were omitted. The Tarmonbarry talented youngster won the U8 sprint and U9 Long Jump. Well done Anthony. On the same day the accolade of ‘athlete of the meet’ must surely go to Bryn Peters winning two gold and two silver medals in the four events that were open to him.
