The monthly meeting of Granard Area Action Group Ltd. will take place in the Information Office Main Street Granard on Monday 7 March at 8.00pm. All members are requested to attend.


A public meeting regarding Granard Christmas Lighting 2011 will take place in the Town Hall Granard on Tuesday 8 March at 8.00pm. Everyone interested please attend.


Great to see a full house again on Wednesday night last at the Abbeylara / Granard Bingo. This week’s Jackpot is 7000 euro. A special thank you to everybody involved in the organising of this Bingo and to all the people who support it every week. Proceeds are divided between both clubs.


Congratulations to Larry and Susan Boland of Abbeylara Garden Centre on the birth of their first child Christopher Laurence born recently in Mullingar Hospital. First grandchild for John and Mary Connell, Robinstown,Granard and of Greenwich, Connecticut, USA.


Midland Retired Secondary Teachers Association will meet on Thursday March 3 at 10am in Citizen Information Centre, Longford (over Tesco). Sheila Hayes, Training Officer CIC, will give presentation on Pensions, Rights and Entitlements to retirees. Members old and new from surrounding counties welcome to attend. A representative from Longford Community Resources Ltd will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Group office Main Street Granard each Tuesday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm. If you have an idea for a project within Co. Longford and would like to develop your local village /area you or your group may be eligible for RDP grant assistance. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service Mobile Unit will be located in St. Brigid’s Community Centre Loch Gowna on Wednesday 30 March and Thursday 31 March from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Please note revised clinic opening times. Regrettably the Mobile Unit will no longer come to Granard so local donors are requested and will be notified to go to either Gowna or Castlepollard in future.

The Dolmen Failte Active Age Group will meet on the following dates for March 1st 15th & 29th at 2.00pm in the Dolmen Centre in Augnacliffe. Activities for these meetings include a visit from the Community Physio, Citizen’ Information Officer, as well a Yoga session. A trip to Longford Megabowl is also being organised. The untimely death of Yvonne Poyntz (nee Ruske) late of Aughaboy Coolarty Co. Longford occurred peacefully at the Mater Hospital Dublin on February 24 following a brief illness. Yvonne was a very popular Post Lady in Granard and surrounding district and everyone who knew her was deeply shocked when news of her death became known on Thursday morning. Removal took place from the family residence to St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday evening. Funeral Service was on Sunday at 2.30pm. Sympathy is extended to her husband Henry sons Gordon Graeme and Richard sister Sylvia brother John and extended family and many friends and colleagues. May she be at rest.

The death of Ann Browne (nee McCann) late of Browne’s Cross Leitrim Coolarty took place at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home Longford on 21 February. Removal took place to St. Mary’s Church Granard on Thursday. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday followed by burial in Granardkille. Sympathy is extended to her son and extended family circle. May she rest in peace.


A very important meeting will be held on Friday 4th March in the Sports Centre Abbeylara at 8pm. This meeting will be attended by Michael Durkin and Niall Broderick of Irish Graveyards Survey. The meeting will correct names and fill in missing names in Abbeylara Cemetery, the Monastery and Carra Cemetery. More details from Michael Durkin 0872076281.
