Cemetery Sunday

Thanks very much too all the people of all ages who came in very large numbers for Cemetery Sunday on Sunday, 1st June in Carra. A special word of thanks to the people, who mowed, strimmed, cleaned and tidied the Cemetery for this important occasion. Also sincere thanks to the people who helped prepare for and celebrate the Rosary and Holy Mass. Please try to keep the cemetery in the good condition that it is now in.

Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament for exam people: - will take place each Thursday during June in Carra Church with Holy Mass at 7.30pm followed by Adoration from 8.00 to 8.30 pm, and each Friday during June in Abbeylara Church from 3.00 to 4.00 pm.


Theresa Bell will speak to us at Masses on Saturday, 14 and Sunday, 15 June about the work of the Samaritans and take up a voluntary collection. Please support.

St. Patrick’s

Killeen Parents’ Association are holding a 5k ‘Fun’ - run/walk/jog fundraiser on Sunday, June 15 at 12pm - starting from McElvaney’s pub Coolarty. Registration will take place at McElvaney’s from 10.30am to 11.30am.  Cost - €10 per adult, €5 per child (U16) or €20 per family. Refreshments will be served afterwards.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.


Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot is now €16,000. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early. IT COULD BE YOU!

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office, Main Street, Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

FETAC Level 5

Ardscoil Phádraig, Granard are currently enrolling for FETAC Level 5 Courses in Sports and Recreation, Childcare, Nursing Studies, Agriculture Business, Information Technology and Animal Care. These FETAC Level 5 Courses are suitable for both school leavers and mature students who wish to return to education and gain new skills or employment. They also provide links to certain courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology and can be worth up to 400 points. Lus na Greine Resource Centre, Granard is now offering Counselling and Bereavement Support which is available on a one to one basis. This is highly confidential and professional support will be given so you don’t have to suffer alone. Appointments can be made through the centre.

A Floral Odyssey

The 11th World Flower Show “A Floral Odyssey” is being held in the RDS Dublin, from the 18 to 22 June 2014. If there are enough people interested Lus na Greine will organise a bus and tickets for one of the days as there is a discount for groups. For further details please call 043 6660977.

Dancing Lessons

The above takes place on Tuesdays in Lus na Greine from 8pm to 10pm. Learn to jive, waltz, foxtrot and quickstep. Cost €10.

Set Dancing

Set dancing classes continues on Friday evenings for children from 6pm – 7pm at Marett Smith’s house.

Adult badminton

GAA Club

Lotto Results: 05/06/2014.No draw as the €100 tickets are still on sale which we hope can return immediately. Then we will be in a position to hold the first draw for the new year, at which we will also have the draw for five by €100 prizes for fully paid up members.

LCRL Rural Transport

We would always welcome new passengers on board the services; it is open to all age groups, with FTP holders travelling Free. Single Fare is €3 and return is €5, for under 65 years. For our local region of Granard/Abbeylara, there are 2 Friday services into Granard = via Robinstown – Abbeylara – Creevy/Cloughernal and in the afternoon = via Derragh – Killasonna – Lisryan to Granard. Our STOP and DEPARTURE point is from the Granard Area Action Group Office on Main Street. The Rural Transport office is based in LCRL Longford, Phone 043 3345555. Competitions continue on Wednesday evenings for all members at Granard Pitch & Putt – adults and juveniles and new beginners at 7pm.  Those competitions will continue for the rest of the Summer months weather permitting.  Anybody who is not a member must pay green fees €5 per day for adults and €2 for Juveniles. Hard luck to our U12 and U14 draughts teams who both lost out to the Ashbourne teams in the Leinster Finals on Friday night. Well done to all the children involved and many thanks to Josephine Reilly and John Reilly for all their time they have put into the kids. We held our sports day last Monday in Abbey and there was a great turn out of kids and parents. We were lucky with the weather as it stayed dry for the few hours.
