Clonfin Commemoration

The annual Clonfin Commemoration will take place on Sunday next, 2 February, commencing with Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Granard at 11.30am. The commemoration ceremony will be at 3.00pm at the site of the Clonfin Ambush where retired Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise Colm O’Reilly will be this year’s guest speaker. Refreshments will follow in McElvaney’s Coolarty. As this year’s commemoration takes place on the exact date of the famous battle the organizing committee are looking forward to a large attendance.

Sacred Heart N.S.
Enrolment of Junior Infants will take place on Friday, 31 January at 2 pm in Sacred Heart N.S. Granard. Parents are welcome to bring their children to the school where they will be introduced to their teacher and will have an opportunity to view their classroom and the school. Gun Club

The Club had a very enjoyable night on 20 December for the annual Christmas draw in John V’s Lounge. Thanks to everyone who supported the draw and especially the ticket sellers. Social Services

Longford Social Services would like to thank everybody who supported our annual Church gate collection recently. All monies collected will be used locally.

Northern Gaels

The A.G.M. of Northern Gaels Minor Club will take place on Friday, 24 January at 8.30pm in Aughnagarron N.S.  Everyone welcome.


The newly refurbished Department of Social Protection Local Office in Granard has reopened to the public again. Staff attend there on Monday mornings. Hours of opening are from 10am to 12 noon. It is great to see the facility open.

Country Markets

The Market has resumed at Upper Main Street next door to Granard Post Office. Trading commences at 8.30am. until 11.00am. every Friday morning. Looking forward to the continued support of all our customers again for 2014.

Greville Arms Golf Society

Held their A.G.M. in December last and in keeping with the Christmas spirit there were praises all around for the hardworking committee. Secretary, Colm Fagan did trojan work was justly rewarded with a presentation on behalf of all members by outgoing Captain “Fantastic” Brendan Kiernan. A healthy Treasurers balance resulted in a motion to be passed for an extra trophy per outing of 19 and over Handicap. Trophy for overall Par 3 Annual Winner. Purchase of St Mary’s G.A.A. €100 Lotto ticket. Purchase of Ballymore G.A.A. €100 Lotto ticket. Incoming Captain, James Leavy presented Leon Fagan with Player of the Year, our first player to win it ‘back to back’. Well done to our members Noel Kelly on winning Midland Alliance in Athlone on 39pts and Mick Murray winning Midland Alliance in Longford on 42pts. We wish a speedy recovery to our Chairman Seamus Finnan, looking forward to seeing him on the Fairways early in 2014 after his T.K.R. Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is appreciated. Jackpot this week is €14,000.

St. Mary’s Lotto

There was no outright winner in the latest draw, numbers drawn were: 1-4-10-27. There was no outright winner. Granard Happy Heart Walking Club have resumed their meetings on Saturday mornings at Higginstown Sports Complex, meeting at 10.15am. New members welcome. Happy Walking for 2014.

21st Celebrations

Congratulations to Joseph Regan, Ballymorris, Granard, who celebrated his 21st birthday with a party for family and friends in Fay’s Bar on Saturday night last. Every good wish for the future Joseph.

Recent Deaths

The death of Breege Gallagher Ward, The Plantin, Cranleymore, Edgeworthstown and formerly of Granard, took place on 14 January at her residence following an illness bravely borne. Removal took place from her sister Teresa’s residence in Carragh on Friday morning for funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Granard, followed by private cremation. Sympathy is extended to her loving husband Jeoff, sisters Kathleen, Mary and Teresa and brother Paul, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

The sudden death of John J. Bogan, Coolarty, took place on Sunday, 19 January at Mullingar Hospital. Removal took place from his late residence on Tuesday evening to St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Granard. Funeral Service on Wednesday at 1.00pm. Sympathy is extended to his mother, Letitia, daughters Martina, Sandra and Amanda and extended family circle. May he rest in peace.

Adoration and Vigil

The next First Friday/Saturday reparation and adoration vigil to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Please note that the first Friday and Saturday in  February is split and the dates are different in our two venues. 1. St Anne’s (former Mercy Convent), Convent Lane, Mohill  is scheduled for Friday, the 31January commencing at an earlier time of 8 pm. 
2. The venue is in the Chapel of Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown is scheduled for Friday, the 7 February commencing at 10 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain special graces and to make reparation.  Also, one has the opportunity to experience the healing and strength of the Sacrament of Confession and Holy Mass and lots more. All are welcome.
