Show meeting

Arva Agricultural Show Society meeting this Thursday night 14th November at 9.30pm. All members please attend. New members always welcome.

St Patrick’s GAA

Will hold a meeting on tomorrow – Thursday – night 14th November at 9.00 pm in the Breffni Arms Hotel. Arrangements will be made for the Club Annual General Meeting among other items on the agenda. All members are requested to attend. Lotto: The Arva Football Club Lotto draw was held in the Club Rooms on Monday 4th November. The Jackpot was €4,650 – Numbers drawn were 8/ 21 / 22 / 28. No winner – €50 winners - Conal Conneely, Arva. Diane Brady, Loughduff, Gerry Elis Snr, Drumalt. The Lotto Jackpot on Monday last 11th November was €4,700-00. Lotto Envelopes can be left in the Letterbox in St Patrick’s Hall next to the National School for collection on Monday evenings and everyone is welcome to attend the draw. The club have an option of paying by direct debit for anyone wishing to join the LOTTO and give the club much needed support. Contact any club officer or check out the club website League: Arva and Shercock had another meeting on Saturday night last in St Aiden’s Park, Bawnboy in the Semi-Final of the Brady’s Arva Division 3 League. The sides met the previous Sunday in Corduff where Arva emerged victorious but unfortunately on this occasion the tables were turned and Shercock emerged winners on a score of 2-8 to 0-12. Sub Peter Conneely. On behalf of the club and the supporters we congratulate the players on gaining promotion to Division 2 for 2014 and reaching the Junior Championship Final. It has been a great year for the club and we thank the players for their efforts all year. Challenge: The football club fundraising venture which was due to take place on this Saturday 16th November called the Croagh Patrick Challenge / Clew Bay Walk has had to be postponed due to the uncertainty of whether or not the club would be playing a game on that date. The new date is Saturday 8th February and the club would urge everyone to keep up their efforts to get Sponsorship in the intervening weeks.


Congratulations are extended to Brian (Beano) Ellis on his selection as one of four players nominated for the Cavan Junior Player of the Year. There are four nominations in each category – Junior / Intermediate / Senior and the winner will be selected by the votes of supporters. To Vote for Brian you send the vote to 57003 and enter Cavan 109. You will get a message of thanks by return. Votes cost €1-00 each. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards at a Banquet in the Hotel Kilmore on Friday week next 22nd November. Tickets for this prestigious event are selling fast so anyone wishing to attend should contact the club Secretary on 087 6794 215 before the end of this week. Also on the night Cian Mackey will be presented with an award as the Club Breffni Cavan Senior Player of the Year while the victorious Cavan U-21 team will be presented with their Ulster Championship medals. This is always a great night for Cavan supporters so don’t delay in ordering tickets – and don’t forget to Vote for Beano.


James Morris and Brian Ellis who were among the nominees for the Munterconnacht Breffni All Stars Team which was announced at a function in the Hotel Kilmore on Saturday week last. Unfortunately neither made the team but on behalf of the club we congratulate them on making the final selection.


Good luck to all the young people who will represent the Arva Club in Junior Scór on this Saturday 16th November in Ballinagh Community Centre at 3.00 pm. Other clubs on the day include Lacken, Mullahoran, Ballymachugh, Crosserlough, Ballinagh and Killeshandra. There are approximately 12 boys and girls representing the Arva Ladies Club and the Arva Juvenile Club taking part in the Music, Ballad Group and Recitation.


The death occurred on 31st October of Mr Cormac Cullen, Bamford, Kilkenny. His funeral took place to Foulkstown Cemetery following Requiem Mass in St Patrick’s Church. Cormac was a son of Cathal Cullen formerly from Gartylough, Arva and is also survived by his mother Catherine, sisters Evanne and Aine, nephew, uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.

For the Arva Church of Ireland Parish Group – This Sunday 17th November Family Service in Carrigallen and Columbkille at 10.00 am and in Arva and Gowna at 11.30 am.


The parishioners of Arva Church of Ireland wish to express their sincere thanks to all the artists & people that supported them in their recent fundraising Concert on 1st November 2013 in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva. It was a successful & enjoyable night.

Table Quiz: on this Friday 15th November in the Piker’s Lodge Hotel, Lough Gowna at 8.30pm. All welcome. Proceeds for Gowna Parish Church. Admission €10 adults, €5 children. Prizes for 1st and 2nd tables and prizes for best Children’s table.

Line Dancing

Classes continue in the Breffni Arms Hotel every Thursday night at 8.30 pm for Beginners and at 9.30 pm for the more advanced. Everyone is welcome so come along and enjoy a night of dancing and exercise in a friendly environment.

Camogie celebrataions

Lacken Camogie are celebrating 25 years on Friday 6h December 2013. The celebration will start with Mass in St Michael’s Church, Potahee followed by champagne reception, Pig on Spit / Hot Food Buffet from 9.30 pm to 10.30 pm in the Millennium Bar, Ballinagh. There will be a Medal Presentation at 10.30 pm followed by dancing to Phil & Cossie. A great night’s craic guaranteed. Keep Fit

Forever Fifty

Skin Care demonstration in Drumlane Community Centre on this Thursday 14th November at 8.30 pm using Skin Care formulated from local Honey and Beeswax. Make-Up demonstrations’ also as featured in the Farmers Journal. Raffle on the night and Christmas Gift Baskets from €15.00.

With the dark evenings now upon us we urge pedestrians / cyclists to make sure to wear reflective clothing while out walking or on their bikes. It is impossible for drivers to see pedestrians / cyclists who wear dark clothing and there is an ample range of appropriate gear available.
