Successful Debut: Garadice Gaels negotiated the first hurdle of the 1-a-side Minor Championship with a good win over Annaduff in Aughawillan on Wednesday of last week. Powered by their dominant midfield duo of Noel Plunkett and Stephen Gilheany, the forwards, except for some early misses, made good use of the regular ball supply. Both sides were guilty of erratic shooting and the visitors were denied an early goal, when the ball cannoned to safety off the Gaels’ crossbar. The home side’s early wastage was compounded by failure to convert a 10th minute penalty, but undaunted by the setback, they were steadied in the space of two minutes when Mark Plunkett (pt) and Stephen Gilheany (gl) opened their account. They had surged into a 4-5 to 0-3 interval lead with excellent scores from Gary Plunkett (2-1), Stephen Gilheany (1-1), Mark Plunkett (0-3) and Gerard Curran (gl). Retaining their first half momentum, and backed by the wind on the resumption, they added scores courtesy of Mark Plunkett (pt.), Stephen Gilheany (2pts), David O’ Connell (pt), Noel Plunkett (1-4) and Conor Gaffney (gl). Great defensive work by defenders Rory McTague, Fionnbarr Quinn and the half back trio, and alert goalkeeping by goalie Killian Lavin confined Annaduff to a point and a well-worked goal, which came too late to fire up their side. The Garadice lineout was Kieran O Haire, Rory McTague, Fionnbarr Quinn, Killian Lavin, Conor Gaffney (1-0), David O Connell(0-1), Noel Plunkett (1-4), Stephen Gilheany (1-3), Adam Kearns, Mark Plunkett (0-4), Declan Flanagan, Gary Plunkett (2-1) and Gerard Curran (1-0).
