Area Action Group Ltd.
The annual general meeting of the group will take place on Wednesday, 6 May at 8pm in the O’Carolan Room at Rath Mhuire Resource Centre, Barrack Street, Granard. The group are sponsors of the local Community Employment Project employing 35 people in the areas of Abbeylara, Bunlahy, Granard and Mullinalaghta as well as assisting various other projects like Rath Mhuire Resource Centre and Dolmen Centre Colmcille, Lus na Greine FRC and ALC Granard.
The guild hold their monthly meeting on Thursday next, 7 May at 8pm in the Seminar Room of Granard Credit Union. All members are requested to attend and new ones will be very welcome.
Held their AGM on Friday, 24 April. Despite a very poor turnout, we formed a committee. Our next meeting will be held this Wednesday, 29 April at 9pm in the Credit Union Office. We are urgently looking for volunteers to help improve our town. Congratulations to the students from Cnoc Mhuire Granard who received an award at the finals of Junk Kouture on Friday night last in the 3 Arena in Dublin. Their entry modelled by Emma Burns won the Bank of Ireland enterprise award. Their entry was entitled Pretty Poll Topper using old election posters. Well done to everyone involved in the project.
Darkness into Light
The annual Darkness into Light 5km run/walk in aid of Pieta House – suicide and self harm crisis centre takes place on 9 May in Longford at 5.15 am at the Mall Complex. Pre registration for the walk will take place on 2 May in SuperValu Longford. At the Mall Complex on 5/6 and 7 May from 4.30 to 7.00pm on 8 May again at the Mall from 11.00am to 2.00pm and 4.30pm to 7.00pm. Registration can also be completed online or on the night/morning of the walk. This is the 8th year of the event which is kindly sponsored by Electric Ireland. There are 80 registered venues across Ireland.
Commiserations to Longford senior footballers who had an embarrassing day at Headquarters on Saturday defeated by Offaly on a scoreline of 4-16 to 1-12. It’s back to the drawing board again for Jack Sheedy and his mentors for the first round of the Championship in Tullamore against Offaly in 3 weeks time.
A huge thank you to the people of Granard for their generosity in donating to Special Olympics on Friday 24 April National Fundraising Day. Also to all who volunteered to collect on the day.
Northern Gaels, the underage footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta are holding a novel fundraising event on Sunday, 31 May at 5pm. A “Duck Race” will take place on the Inny River at Derragh. Further details later.
Moatsider’s Active Retirement Group
We have a busy schedule for May with the Bealtaine Festival, starting on 7th May in conjunction with Granard Community Library. Together with 6th class Sacred Heart Primary School we will be sharing the ‘The Poems We Loved at School’. The morning will be facilitated by Eamonn Brennan at 11.30pm. in Granard Community Library. We always give a warm welcome to new members, so, if you would like to join us in any of our activities or events in the coming months, please get in touch.
Men’s Social Club
Meeting Dates: May 12th and 26th – at 12.30pm – in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. The club provides a great space for lots of activities, trips as well as good company and good food. Currently, the group are involved in Woodwork and Basket Making.
The group had their meeting on Monday, 27th April at 3pm in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. Our aim is to promote creative writing in an enjoyable and relaxed environment and new members are always welcome.

The annual Bealtaine Festival commences on this Friday, 1st May with an Afternoon Tea Dance in the Park House Hotel, Edgeworthstown from 2.00 to 5.00pm. In conjunction with Bealtaine Festival a number of events are taking place in Granard Community Library to celebrate creativity for older people during the month of May. The theme for 2015 is “What land and country is this?” The first event in the Library is on Thursday 7 May when the 6th Class from Sacred Heart Primary School Granard and Granard Moatsider’s Group share their favourite poems from schooldays. This event is facilitated by Eamon Brennan. Details of further events next week.
5k Fun Run /Walk/Cycle
Abbeylara Drama group are holding a 5K Walk/Fun Run/ Cycle in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund on Monday 4 May at 2.00pm. Registration from 12.30pm in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara. Entry fee €10 per person or €20 per family. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Members of the “Done and Dusted” cast will lead the walk in full costume. Entertainment in Crawford’s afterwards.
The committee are hosting a major fundraising night at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday 15 May next. First Race starting at 8p.m. Tickets are priced at €10.00 and will be available from any Committee Member and also at various locations around the town.
Stars in our Eyes

Abbeylara Parish Centre
Derek Ryan and his band are topping the bill for the opening of the new Parish Centre in Abbeylara on 12 June.

Co. Longford Fleadh
