In the 1920s Jimmy Gralton, a political activist and free thinker built a dance hall at Effernagh near Carrick-on-Shannon, where young people could dance, play music and learn. As the hall grew in popularity, its socialist and free spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the church and Jimmy was forced to flee and the hall to close. Ten years later at the height of the depression Jimmy returns from the States and seeing the poverty and growing cultural depression in the area decides to re-open the hall, making himself an enemy of the establishment.

This new exhibition by Aisling Blackburn at the Solas Gallery, Ballinamore has been creating a lot of interest since it was selected as a solo Exhibition. Opening on Friday, 3rd October this exhibition will occupy the whole of the gallery space. Aisling has been working on the concept of this show for nearly a year, it is a portrait of women: woman in her many facets; peaceful; powerful and potent. This is Aislings second solo show at Solas, she has exhibited at many of the group shows as well as in “Open Season” at the Dock. Based in Killyran Aisling has always liked painting and drawing, but increasingly has found that her camera has been her most constant companion. From there it was a short step to the recording arts where she began as a voluntary interviewer for Cavan Community Radio and then in 2012 on to film making and Aisling has already made a few short documentaries relevant to her great interest in community life.
