A man’s life was saved recently in Ballymore health centre with an AED (Defibrillator). I was lucky enough to talk to the lady who acted so quickly and helped save this man’s life. I asked her to give me her account of the situation. This is her account, I would like to thank her for sharing her experience. A few weeks ago a man collapsed, without warning in a village in Co Westmeath - It was established that he was not breathing and had no pulse - a phone call to the emergency services was made by myself, as I was aware of the importance of calling for help. I made sure to inform the emergency operator, of the patients location and the possible need for an air ambulance. - I then ran to the location of the nearest AED and obtained same - I immediately placed the AED on the man and waited for instructions - I followed the instructions and rotated between chest compression and using the AED to administer shocks - Approx. 15-20 minutes later the paramedics arrived and took over the care of the gentleman - The man was then airlifted to hospital where he received urgent care - I am very happy to report that this man is alive and well and suffered no after effects from his collapse (M.I) - It is without doubt that the AED and CPR administered, saved this man’s life - The community of Ballymore were commended for having fundraised and having AED’s located around the parish, with many local people trained up on same. - Well done to all those who learn how to be trained up on the use of AED’s and CPR. Please continue to encourage people to learn this valuable life-saving skill. Training starts back in October if interested please give your name to Darren Mulledy on 0861704394. All AED’s in Tang, Forgney and Ballymahon area are kept serviced and pads and batteries are in date. Thanks to the community groups that look after their AED’s.
