Community games

The Longford Community Games Swimming Final was held in Longford swimming pool on Monday 5 May with 95 swimmers from all over the county taking part. Abbeylara/Mullinalaghta achieved great success at this event with two swimmers; Ciaran Scanlon and Aisling Scanlon winning gold in their respective events, U-12 breast stroke and U-10 backstroke and will now represent Longford in the National Finals in August.  Medals were also won by Siobhan Leonard, (silver, in U-12 breast stroke), Conor Leonard, (bronze in U-12 freestyle) and Tomas Scanlon (bronze in U-8 freestyle). Well done also to Aoife Leonard, who narrowly missed out on a medal. A great evening of swimming was also held on Sunday 11 May last in Longford Swimming Pool with the County Community Games Finals being held. Abbeylara/Mullinalaghta Community Games had a total of 6 swimmers in it. Thomas Scanlon going in the U-8 freestyle and finishing in a great finish to claim 3rd spot. This was his 1st competition and he is the one to watch. Next was his sister Aisling in the U-10 freestyle. Aisling won an All Ireland Gold last year at U-8 level, so it was a big step up for her, but she dug deep and pulled off a great win and collected her gold medal. Next up was Connor Leonard in the U-12 freestyle were he finished a very close second in the heats putting him through to the final were he came 3rd. Aoife Leonard was next up in the U-12 backstroke. Again, it was heats were she was piped at the finish line for 1st place but 2nd place seen her through to the final were she was very unlucky to be piped at the finish line again and finished in 4th place. Hot on Aoife heels was Ciaran Scanlon who put in a good swim in his U-12 breaststroke heat to finish 1st and a very strong swim in the final saw Ciaran take gold with a lot to spare. Our final swimmer was Siobhan Leonard in the U-12 breaststroke in a very close race, Siobhan finished strong to finish in 2nd place. Well done to all the boys and girls in their swimming, you done great. Ciaran and Aisling will now represent Longford in the national finals later in the year.
