Cycle & Climb
The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb, from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday June 1st. This is a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge, setting off from Longford at 4:30am to complete the 147km cycle and then take on the 3.5 hour climb of Croagh Patrick. Congratulations to David and Aisling Reynolds, Bunlahy on the birth of their first child, a girl, born on Tuesday last May 6th. This young lady is to be named Saoirse Rose and she is a welcome grand daughter for Noel and Rose Conway, Ballygarve, Killoe and Gerard and Helen Reynolds, Bunlahy and great grand daughter for Mrs Jeanie Slevin.
Dring Open Air Festival
On Sunday June 1st next, Colmcille Branch of the Mentally Handicapped will hold their annual fundraising event on the shores of Loch Gowna at Dring car park. This years event will mark the 40th anniversary of the festival, so the committee have pulled out all the stops to make it a very special celebration. The present committee are to be congratulated for their great efforts in keeping this festival alive for the last forty years and lets all salute the memory of all those great committee members who are now passed on. Mass for all members will be celebrated by Bishop Emeritus Colm O’Reilly at the site on Sunday, June 1st at 1-30pm and following it, the entertainment will start with big names like The Queen of Country herself, Philomena Begley, her son Aidan Quinn and his band, The Murphy’s, Chuck and June, Ballinamuck’s Noel Casidy, Paul Lynch, Philip Rogers, Jason McGilligan, Ciaran Rooney, Jane McNamee, David O’Reilly and locals The Brady Family, Frank Kilbride and Seamus Sheirdan. Apart from the entertainment on the stage, there will also be the usual stalls and side shows like a fishing competition organised by North Longford Anglers, face painting for the children, cake stall, Baby show, Wellie Throwing, Duck fishing, Ferret Racing etc. etc. Tea and Coffee and refreshments will be available throughout the day, so come along and enjoy a great evening of top class entertainment and support St. Christopher’s
On Sunday evening, May 25th next, Rath Mhuire Granard and Dolmen Services will host The Virginia Gospel Choir in St. Mary’s Church, Granard starting at 6pm. They will be joined by many All Ireland winning musicians along with St. Mary’s church choir for an evening of lovely music and song. Tickets are on sale for 10 euro each and your support will be greatly appreciated.
Sincere sympathy is extended to the Hughes family, Farragh, Killoe on the recent death of their mother Mrs Rose Hughes and to the Bracken and Begley families, Killoe on the death of Bridie Bracken. May they both rest in peace.
The executive committee of the Ballymore Football club wish to sincerely thank the directors and management of Granard Farmers Mart for their generosity in returning to the club the prize of one thousand euro which they won in the monthly draw. Ballymore Football club held the raffle for a large load of top quality firewood donated by the Brady family, Ballinlough in McElvaney’s on Friday night last and the lucky winner was Pat McGann from Ballincurry, Drumlish, so we congratulate Pat and wish him safe burning. Further prizes of a Bottle of Brandy donated by Willie Monaghan was won by Myles Creegan, Drumlish and a bottle of vodka donated by the McElvaney family was won by Tom Duffy, Cranleymore. The club wishes to thank all who supported the raffle and all who sold the tickets. Well done to all.
On Saturday last, the children from the schools in the parish of Granard received their first Holy Communion and from St Gusacht’s in Bunlahy were - Amber Murtagh, Megan Murtagh, Kaitlin Higgins, Sarah Macken and Matt O’Reilly while from St. Patrick’s in Muckerstaff came Geraldine Hynes, Luke Shierdan, Aisling O’Hara, Killian McGivney, Sean O’Brien and Shazlyn Canning. We congratulate all the youngsters, their parents and teachers and hope all had a great time.
