The official opening of Granard Market House Community Library took place on Thursday, 8 May at 3pm. Minister for the Environment Mr. Phil Hogan T.D. performed the opening of the newly refurbished facility, together with the Mayor of Co. Longford Larry Bannon and Mayor of Granard Town Council Maura Kilbride Harkin. This was Maura’s last official engagement as Mayor of Granard as the Town Council will be dissolved later this month. The library is a wonderful facility to have in our community and we all look forward to many years of enjoyable reading/information with Rosemary and staff in their magnificent new surroundings.
Congratulations to all the children from the Parish schools who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday, 10 May. Well done also to their teachers, parents and guardians.
Mass will be celebrated at the Grotto on this Wednesday evening at 7.30p.m. weather permitting.
Happy Heart Appeal

Temple Street Children’s University Hospital is holding a Benefit Night in the Crossroads Inn, Lisryan on Saturday, 17 May. Music by Noel Briody. Raffle on the night for valuable prizes. Your support will be appreciated.
Tai Chi continues at 8.15 pm in the Credit Union meeting room on this Thursday, 15 May. At the Granard Guilds recent meeting Paul Flood from Granard Motte Enterprise Centre gave a very informative talk on the progress of the group to date and we wish them well with their endeavours. The next meeting will be held on 5 June and this will be our last meeting before the Summer recess. It was decided at the May meeting that the Guilds Annual outing will be to the Garden Party at An Grianan on 17 July. Those who expressed interest in going on this outing please bring €55 to meeting on 5 June. A bus will be arranged and there will be further information regarding time etc. later.
The AGM of the Buttermarket committee will take place on Tuesday, 20 May at approximately 8pm in the Town Hall/Library. A full attendance is expected and requested. Please note change of date and time. It will be immediately after the Town Council meeting.

It would be beneficial if individuals and groups in the area could log events so as to avoid duplication. The service continues at the offices of Granard Area Action Group each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. We welcome back Christine Lee following her surgery and thank Rose O’Grady who filled in while Christine was absent. Pitch and Putt Club
In association with the PPUI Granard Pitch and Putt club are holding an information week from the 19 May to the 24 May. For free coaching lessons contact Roy Burke 087 6636838. Competitions for all new beginners will be held on Wednesday the 21 May at 7.00 sharp. Pitch and Putt is a very pleasant and relaxing sport and can be played by people of all ages. Fundraiser Head Shave on 30 May in Coy’s Bar Longford starting at 9.30pm in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only Children’s Hospice and St. James’s Hospital Foundation. Marion Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities.

Rath Mhuire & Dolmen Services
Virginia Gospel Choir: We are looking forward to welcoming the Virginia Gospel Choir for a performance on Sunday 25 May at 6pm in St. Mary’s Church. The choir will be joined by Jackie Callaghan and other All Ireland winning musicians form the World Academy of Irish Music and Dance from the University of Limerick as well as our own excellent St. Mary’s Church Choir. This should be a wonderful evening and tickets prices at €10.00 are available at Rath Mhuire Resource Centre and other outlets in Granard and surrounding areas. Contact Lucy or Jackie at 043-6686309. Writers Group: The group will be launching their CD on Thursday, 29 May in the newly refurbished Library. This is a collection of non-fiction, prose and poetry many with local themes of our place and community. Noel Monohan will be launching the collection and it should be a very interesting and enjoyable evening. All are welcome. Details re launch time will be announced near the date.
Cycle & Climb
The 4th Annual Glenn Brady Memorial Cycle and Climb from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday June 1st. This is a very enjoyable and rewarding challenge. Setting off from Longford at 4:30am to complete the 147km cycle and then take on the 3.5 hour climb of Croagh Patrick. The popularity of this event has grown massively since it began in 2011, and 2014 will be bigger than ever. Register now at www.glennbradycycle.com, Registration closes on Saturday 24th May.

Garden Open Day
There will be an open day at Paddy and Mary Gillooley’s Garden, Mill Road, Drumlish in aid of Carol Galvin Forde Fund on Saturday 24 May from 10.00am to 6.30pm. Admission is optional.
Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Barrack Street, Granard at 8.45pm. Proceeds go to St. Mary’s GAA and Abbeylara GFC. Your continued support is much appreciated. Jackpot this week is €15,500. The Bingo was cancelled last week due to the untimely death of Pauraig Kearney former St. Mary’s player who captained the 1982 team that won the last Senior Co. Championship for Granard.

The annual Festival at Dring organised by the local group of the Mentally Handicapped Association takes place on Sunday 1 June. This is the 40th year of the event so there will be special celebrations with an exciting line up. The day commences with celebration of Mass at 1.30pm for present and deceased members of the association. All proceeds to St. Christopher’s Services Battery Road Longford.
