Ash Wednesday this year is celebrated today Wednesday 5 March. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at the 7.30 p.m. Mass tonight in Abbeylara Church. We are all encouraged to try and take part in Holy Mass as often as possible during Lent.


Please note that Ash Wednesday, 5 March is a day of fast and abstinence. Again we are encouraged to try to do some form of fasting during Lent.

Learn to Jive

Learn to jive with Eamonn Cunniss five times All Ireland champion, on Tuesday evenings in the Pikers Lodge, Gowna and on Sunday evenings in Farrell’s Lounge, Ballinalee from 8pm to 10pm. Just turn up on the night. Everyone is welcome, fee €10.

Social Dancing

Social Dancing has commenced on Sunday nights in the Stag’s Head, Ballinalee from 9.30pm. No cover charge and take your pick on the night. A great night is guaranteed so come along and dance the night away!

5K Road Race/Fun Run

Castletown- Finea, Coole Whitehall GFC are holding a 5K Road Race and Fun Run on Sunday, 23 March at 12 noon. The event is AAI approved and fully insured and is a full road course. Times will be published on Facebook after the event. Prizes for many categories including Seniors, Juniors, Over 40’s, Over 50’s and U-12 National School Children. There will be special group for children walking the route, fully supervised with two stewards. Refreshments will be served in Fitzsimons Bar following the event. Benefit night

A Benefit night will take place this Saturday night, 8 March in Creegan’s Bar, Bunlahy in aid of the Sammon family, Bunlahy, following a recent house fire. Admission is optional. Music by Chuck and June. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Abbeylara Tidy Towns held their AGM on Thursday, 20 February last where a new committee was elected. Chairperson: Marcella Kelly, Vice Chairperson: TP Heaney, Secretary: Denis Fahey, Treasurer: Susan Boland, Liaison Officer: Denis Fahey. Next meeting takes place on Thursday, March 20 at 8.30pm. 

Solemn Novena

A Solemn Novena in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Help has commenced at the Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott on Tuesday evenings beginning at 7.30pm with the Rosary followed by Novena Prayers and Mass at 8pm. Enquiries from 049 8544416. The Novena will conclude on Tuesday 22 April.

Fundraising Concert

A Fund Raising Concert will take place on Wednesday, 9 April in Crover House Hotel, Mountnugent at 8.30 p.m. with Mick Flavin and his Band. Proceeds go towards the maintenance of Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott.

Musical Society

Tractor Run

On Sunday March 16 next a Tractor run will leave from Creegan’s in Bunlahy and proceed to Granard, Abbeylara, Lisryan, Edgeworthstown, Ballinalee and returning to Bunlahy. Registration which will cost 20 euro will start at 10am and continue until 11.30am and the run will leave at Midday.
