GAA 5K/10K Fun Run/Walk

On Saturday next, 8th March the local GAA club will hold their fundraising 5K/10K fun run/walk. The event will commence from the GAA complex in Carrickedmond at 11am with registration from 9am to 10:45am. The course measurement complies with IAAF rules and has chip and pin timing. Prize giving and free draw for all participants at 12:30pm in the GAA complex. Refreshments also provided on the day. Entry fee is as follows. €10 walkers, €15 runners and €30 for family of four. A great fun day is assured and hopefully everyone will come along to join in the fun and help with fundraising for the Carrickedmond GAA club.

Ash Wednesday

This Wednesday, the 5th March is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Mass with the blessing and distribution of ashes will take place in Abbeyshrule at 10am and in Carrickedmond at 7pm.

Spring Stations

The following spring stations will take place during March for the following town lands in the parish. At the home of PV McEntee on Monday, 3rd March at 8pm for the Ratharney area. At the home Joe and Shirley McCormack on Friday, 21st March at 8pm for the Colehill area.

Defibrillator Group

Twelve new people attended a CPR/AED course in St Sinneach’s hall Carrickedmond on Tuesday night last. All twelve successfully passed the course and this now brings the total trained in the area ninety. Congratulations to all concerned. If there are other people interested in doing this course please contact Seamus Mc Guire at 086-8286748 or Anthony Greene at 086-3993933 as it is intended to run another course in April.

Folk Group

Rehearsals continue in Carrickedmond church on Wednesday nights from 8pm to 9pm. Next folk mass will take place in Carrickedmond church on Sunday, 30th March at 10am mass. New members always welcome.

To Garret Higgins and Barry O’Farrell who are members of the Longford U-21 panel who take on Laois tonight in the quarter final of the Leinster championship game which will take place in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise.


Continues in the hall on usual nights for adults and children. A club social night will take place in the Rustic-Inn on Saturday night, the 19th April with music by the very popular country star Ciaran Rosney. Dancing from 10pm - 1am. Clothing Factory Re-Union

Plans are underway for a re-union for the people who worked in Ballymahon clothing factory, Chaffey’s, Dubtex, Balman, Manford and Manford Direct. All past employees of these factories together with their partners, families and friends are invited and all others who would like to attend on the night are also welcome. The venue is the “The Rustic Inn” Abbeyshrule on Friday night the 25th April commencing at 9pm sharp. Music will be provided by various artists followed by a disco with DJ Michael Rooney. This promises to be a great night to renew old acquaintances. There will be a raffle and spot prizes and donations buckets will be at the door with all proceeds on the night going to local charities.

Table Quiz

The ladies GAA club will hold a table quiz on Friday March 14th in the Rustic-Inn Abbeyshrule commencing at 9pm. The cost for a table of four is €10 per person. There will be a raffle on the night with lots of cash prizes. All proceeds go to the local ladies football club.

Altar Servers

A final reminder to all parents of children who serve mass to please return the documentation relating to Child Safeguarding to Fr Tiernan by next weekend.

Ladies GAA Registration Day

All interested ladies from the area please note that the local ladies GAA club will hold a registration day on Saturday 15th March for all under age and senior lady players in the GAA complex Carrickedmond at 11:30am. Cost per player is as follows under age €35 and senior € 50. For more information contact any committee member.


To David Shannon and Niall O’Farrell, both members of the Longford minor panel who scored a great win over Offaly on Saturday last in the Leinster League final played in Lanesboro. Well done all.
