The Ramblers walked on Sunday, February 23rd in Ballynacargy. The Royal Canal lock and harbour on the edge of the village have been rejuvenated over the last year with flower beds and seats, while the new stonework along the stream which runs into the harbour matches the original stonework of the bridge over the canal at the western end of the harbour. Attractive lamps on the street leading down to the harbour add to the picturesque scene. The Ramblers left the village behind, heading south, out past Deerpark towards Irishtown, then took a side road which led on to the Canal near Kiddy’s Bridge. The Canal is built on an embankment for much of the way from Kiddy’s Bridge to Ballynacargy so the Ramblers were afforded an elevated view of the surrounding countryside on their way back along the towpath to the village. Back in the Community Hall Rambler Patricia Bruton treated the group to tea and delicious home-made scones to end the afternoon. Thank you to Patricia and also to Ballynacargy Parish Hall Committee for the use of the Hall. The Ramblers will walk another stretch of the Royal Canal on Sunday March 7th when they visit Coolnahay. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at Coolnahay Harbour at 2pm.
