League: Arva travelled to Sheelin Park, Ballyheelan on Friday evening last to play the home side in the Brady’s Volkswagen Division 3 League and after a great encounter they emerged victorious by 4 points on a score Arva 5 - 4 Ballymachugh 1-11. It was a surreal type of game with Arva not making enough of the possession they enjoyed and shooting many wide’s but they easily opened up the defence to score the goals. Brian Ellis got two from play and another from a superbly struck penalty. Fergal Mc Glade shot two goals while Kevin Bouchier scored the 4 points. Fergal Mc Glade was harshly sent off on a double yellow with 15 minutes left to play but despite a continuous onslaught from the home side Arva stood firm and never looked like losing. Arva Team – Sean Donnelly, Shane Finnegan, James Morris, Patrick Murtagh, Stephen Ellis, Thomas Brady, Shane Mc Entee, Brian Fitzpatrick, Ciaran Brady, Fergal Mc Glade, Cian Sheridan, Alan Barry, Jonathan Mc Cabe, Kevin Bouchier, Brian Ellis. Subs – Danny Mc Entee, Raymond Daly. On Sunday Arva welcomed Kildallan to Michael Cully Park and on a beautiful day for football Arva triumphed again to put themselves top of the League table. While they have the same points as Ballymachugh they have a better scoring difference and so top the table. As the first half progressed it looked as if the scores would be the same as Friday night only in reverse as the visitors led at half time by 2-4 to 0-8and only for a brilliant save from Sean Donnelly they would have been further ahead. The interval came at the right time for the home side and they refocused and held Kildallan to a single point in the second half until the 5th minute of injury time when they were awarded a penalty which Killian Doonan converted and the long whistle sounded. Arva scored 1-6 in the second half with Kevin Bouchier hitting the net after a good pass from Brian Ellis. Arva team and scorers – Sean Donnelly, Shane Finnegan, James Morris, Patrick Murtagh, Stephen Ellis, Thomas Brady (0-1), Shane Mc Entee, Brian Fitzpatrick, Ciaran Brady (0-4), Fergal Mc Glade, Cian Sheridan, Alan Barry, Jonathan Mc Cabe, Kevin Bouchier (1-4), Brian Ellis (0-4), Subs – Danny Mc Entee, Ciaran Cooney, Raymond Daly (0-1).

Death: It is with regret that we record the death of Mrs Elizabeth Brady, Forthill, Arva which occurred at the residence of her daughter Mrs Dympna Mc Connell, Drumshinney, Arva. Lily was what she was known as to everyone and she was a native of nearby Coronea. She was an extremely kind and friendly lady who worked hard all her life helping on the family farm – firstly at home and then with her late husband Paddy when she came to Forthill in 1959. She had a great love for the land and all farm animals and this was also true of her life. She loved meeting people and visitors to her home were assured of a cup of tea and a friendly conversation. She created a loving home for her family and when they brought friends to visit they were assured of a great welcome. She loved to hear that they were getting on well in life and had a genuine interest in what they were involved in. While many people of a younger age might be fearful of flying to New Zealand Lily done it twice to visit her son Vincent and also visited New York a number of times. Lily got tremendous enjoyment with her grandchildren whom she idolised and they returned her love a hundredfold. In later years Lily moved into an apartment in Arva and was very happy there as she could walk to the church and to visit her many friends in the town. When she became unwell she moved in with Dympna where she was well cared for. Lily was predeceased by her husband Paddy and is survived by her sons Gerard in Sligo, Vincent in New Zealand, Tommy in Drumshinney, daughters Dympna in Drumshinney, Teresa in Dublin, Ann York in England, sisters Teresa in New York and Sr Anna Patricia in Cork, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and many friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy. Her remains were removed to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and following Requiem Mass burial took place in Coronea Cemetery. Rev Eamonn Bredin C.C. officiated.
