Take Me Out: The annual Take Me Out event will take place on Easter Sunday 31st March in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva. This year the proceeds of the event will be donated to Longford Palliative Home Care. Tickets cost €10 and will be sold door to door or you can pay at the door. There will be a raffle and disco on the night. Please come along and support this very worthy cause. A great night’s entertainment is promised.
Hit & Miss Golf Society: A great day was had by all the members and our new captain at our first golf outing for 2013. Twenty three members looked on as our Captain John Carragher hit the first shot of the year on a great course in New Forest. The weather was ideal for good golf and the scores return reflected the conditions. In 1st place with a terrific score of 43pts was Brendan Reilly (Rory Mc Ilroy watch out). Category prizes went to: 0 -14: Anthony Maguire; 15- 22: Barry Kennedy; 22- 30: Gerry Mc Cabe; Nearest the Pin: Dinny Maguire; Our next Outing is on The 23rd March. Lotto: Results for the March 6th G.A.A. lotto draw are as follows. The numbers drawn were: 2, 3, 18 and 23. There was no winner of the jackpot. €20 winners were: Colm & Agnes Mc Cormack, Niall Brady, Brian O’Reilly, Nathan & Shayne Mc Glynn. The jackpot is now €6,650. Envelopes are on sale in all local shops and usual outlets.
Colmcille Frolics Galore: Good Friday 29th March is a date for your diary as we see the revival of Colmcille Frolics Galore. We will see some old faces and plenty of new faces take to the stage. More details in the coming weeks.
Retired Teacher’s Association: The above association will meet on Tuesday March 19th in Longford Library at 11am. Laura Thompson of Healthy Options will speak on all things health related and answer questions. Laura promotes holistic/natural therapies/products and is very qualified in same. Suitable for the men too! We will then have our meeting followed by lunch. Look forward to seeing you, please bring a friend. Celebrate Cian Weekend: The organising committee and The Smith Family wish to sincerely thank the whole community for the overwhelming support they received during the past “Celebrate Cian Weekend”. The phenomenal goodwill and generosity of all has exceeded all our expectations. The final figure for the “Make a Wish” Foundation is not available yet as there are still donations being received. CYCLE TO CROAGH PATRICK: The 3rd Annual Cycle and Climb to Croagh Patrick for the Parish of Granard Lourdes Invalid Fund, will take place on Saturday 1st June 2013. 2012 was a very successful and enjoyable day as over 40 cyclists completed the event, while many more people participated in the climb. We hope this year will be equally successful, and there is plenty of time for any aspiring cyclists to fit in the training. A special event to launch this year’s cycle will take place on Saturday 4th May, from 9am on Saturday morning a Static Cycle “1500km from Granard to Lourdes” will take place, followed by a Fancy Dress Party in John V Donohoe’s on Saturday night. North Longford Men’s Group: The participants of the above group meet every Friday from 12 – 3pm in the local community centre in Aughnacliffe with the exception weeks when they go on their monthly outing. On these weeks there will be no meeting. On Tuesday February 26th the group travelled to the mining experience in Arigna, Co. Roscommon. A fantastic day was had by everyone that attended. The group had a beautiful lunch at the EDI Centre before travelling to Arigna. Michael the tour guide met the group and introduced them to the underground tour. The group experienced what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world. They were taken to the coal face of the mine where methods used to extract coal were demonstrated. Lighting and sound effects added to the authenticity of the underground experience. Thanks to the tour guide Michael for a very informative trip, also to Garda Ken Duggan, Longford Community Garda and Acorn for the use of their bus. Men’s health awareness – The Men’s group in partnership with EDI Centre Longford & Marie Keating foundation have rescheduled the programme on men’s & women’s health awareness. The programme will now take place on Wednesday April 10th, as we all Work together to beat cancer through awareness, education and support services. This programme is free and will take place in EDI Centre Longford. Everyone is welcome. Colmcille Minor GAA Club: Tickets go on sale this week for our annual Easter Hamper Draw. Tickets are €2 each and can be purchased from any of the underage players or members of the minor executive. All support is greatly appreciated Training has commenced for minor, under 16 and under 14 teams and will begin very shortly for all other underage teams. The Late Leo Mc Nerney: It is with sadness that we note the passing of Leo Mc Nerney, Corrickodorish. Sincere sympathy is extended to his mother Bridgie, brothers John, Turlough, Christopher, Colm and Philip, sister Kathleen, his extended family and friends.
