BBQ and Pig Roasting: The long awaited and eagerly anticipated Outdoor BBQ and Pig Roasting event is almost upon us, taking place this weekend, on Saturday 2nd July 2011. The evening promises to surpass all expectations with a great night’s entertainment guaranteed. The roasting of the pig is always a spectacle in itself and has been the subject of conversation within the community for some time with everyone looking forward to this social event of the year. This BBQ has always been a summer event not to be missed giving members of the community a great opportunity to meet up and catch up and this year will be no exception. Of course there will be a DJ for the evening, DJ John Carrigy, providing appropriate and lively music to set the tone for what is sure to be a long night of socialising. There will be a wide selection of food to choose from including that being barbequed and the roasted pig and this will be served from 9pm to 11pm sharp. Tickets are still on sale from any GAA member this week and it’s advised to get them as soon you can before the event sells out as the countdown to the big night is nearing its end.
Glee Club: A Glee Summer Camp involving pop singing and dancing will be held in the Temperance Hall, Longford during the week 4th July to the 8th July 2011 from 10am to 1pm daily. GAA Lotto: Last week’s GAA Lotto draw was held in Casey’s, Carrickboy for a jackpot of 1700 euro. The numbers drawn were 7, 13, 23 and 25. There was no jackpot winner nor no match three winner. Special draw winners of 50 euro each were John Joe Ward and Ann Tonks. This week’s draw was held in Mitchell’s, Legan for a jackpot of 1750 euro, results of which will be published next week.
Cemetery Masses: Cemetery Masses will take place in the local Cemeteries this July. Please inform relatives and friends of the deceased of the times and dates of the individual Cemetery Masses. They are as follows: Friday July 8th at 8.00pm in Foxhall Cemetery, Friday July 15th at 8.00pm in Kilglass Cemetery and Friday July 22nd at 8.00pm in Agharra Cemetery.
Deaths: The death took place last week of Mrs Kathleen Gannon, Carrigeen in the County Hospital, Mullingar following a short illness. Kathleen, a native of Glen was reserved and hardworking who dedicated her life to her family of five girls and four boys. She will be sadly missed by all knew her, but most especially by her husband Bernie, children, grandchildren, her wide circle of relatives and friends, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. Kathleen was laid to rest in the new cemetery, Legan following Requiem Mass on Sunday last. May she Rest in Peace. We extend our deepest sympathy also to Geraldine Kiernan, Tenalough and family on the death of her sister Kathleen Begley nee Gavin who passed away suddenly at her home in Athlone last week. May she Rest in Peace.
Win for Longford: Congratulations and well done to the County Longford Football Team who beat Cavan well at Breffni Park on Saturday last in the first round of the qualifiers of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. We now meet Tyrone at home in Pearse Park in the next round. We wish the Longford players the best of luck in their preparation for this next big match.
ICA: The Longford Federation ICA are holding their garden competitions now with adjudication taking place at the end of July to early August. Entries are required to be in before June 30th to Lilian Walsh on 086-6014661. The Flower Garden Competition is confined to ICA members only. The Vegetable Garden Competition is open to all gardeners, male and female in Co. Longford and the Children’s Section requires a small plot of either flowers or vegetables; this section is open to all children in Co. Longford.
