The late Elizabeth McPhillips

On Sunday morning last we were all saddened when the news came through that Elizabeth McPhillips of Cavan had lost her battle with serious illness and had passed to her eternal reward. Lizzie as she was known to her family and friends had been ill for the past number of weeks having suffered a brain haemorrhage from which she never recovered. Lissie was daughter of the late Paddy and Sarah Dempsey of Orangefort, Coolarty and she was predeceased by her brother Paddy in February 2014. Lissie was born on August 25th 1957 and she was the sixth child of a family of twelve born to Paddy and Sarah Dempsey and she attended Killeen old school and later the new school in Muckerstaff and like many past pupils she would have been looking forward to the schools reunion which will be held on September 27th next. As a young girl, Lissie joined her sisters working in Harte’s restaurant in Longford and on the occasion of her marriage to Sean

McPhillips, she moved to Cavan where she reared her family of three girls and two boys and while doing this she worked hard to make sure

her family wanted for nothing. In more recent times, Lissie lived in Cavan town and she looked forward to visits from her family and always had a great warm welcome for anyone from the Coolarty area who might call to see her. On a personal note, I have very fond memories of starting school with Lissie and we always looked forward to getting

the lovely FLASH Bar from her mother Sarah when she returned from her shopping trip to Granard. Lissie’s remains reposed in Finnegan’s

funeral home on Tuesday evening from 4pm and large crowds from the parish of Granard and from Cavan attended to say a fond farewell to Lissie and the Cathedral was full when her remains arrived for prayers at seven. Again on Wednesday morning large crowds attended her funeral Mass and the celebrant told us of Lissie’s deep faith and how she attended Mass weekly and was great for attending funerals. We offer our sincere sympathy to her daughters Siobhan, Leona and Sabrina,

sons Paul and Anthony, grandchildren, sisters Tina, Marcella, Anne, Nellie, Sarah, Bernie, Bridie, Dorrie, brothers Willie and Richard and extended family. May she rest in peace.
