New School Year

Ardscoil Phadraig is re-opening on Friday, 28 August for all First Years. Fifth years are due back on Monday, 31 August. All remaining students are back on Tuesday, 1st September. QQI Level 5 courses in Nursing Studies and Animal Care are also due to begin next week. Contact the school for times and dates.

Historical Society

To celebrate Heritage week, we are delighted to say we have invited Dr. Kieran O’Connor to give a lecture/talk on Granard Motte and Bailey. Many people will be familiar Kieran due the work he carried out on the Motte in recent years, and his lecture on ‘Granard Motte & Bailey’ which will be held on Friday, 28 August at 8pm in Granard Library, should be of great interest to everyone. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Tractor Run

The annual tractor run in aid of Diabetes takes place on Sunday, 30 August, departing from Granard Farmers Mart at 2.00pm. Barbeque (weather permitting) and Raffle for valuable prizes in J.V.’s afterwards. Your support will be appreciated.

Marathon

The annual Longford Marathon takes place on Sunday, 30 August. The event is kindly sponsored once again by local Granard business Pat the Baker. On line bookings for half and marathon relay and ultra marathon on the Longford Marathon Website.

I.C.A.

Granard Guild I.C.A. will resume meetings on Thursday 3rd September at 8.00pm. New members are very welcome to attend. Programme for the Winter season will be discussed all members are looking forward to meeting up.

Rural Development Programme

Longford Community Resources Ltd has commenced the consultation process to develop the Local Strategy for next round of the Rural Development Programme, commonly known as the LEADER programme. Letters and submission forms are currently being circulated. SVP Education Assistance

Saturday 29 August at 12.00pm - A Viking Warship Sails Again - The Stallion from Glendalough – a talk by Brendan Fagan. Saturday at 3.00pm - Introducing John Dungan: A Man of Wealth and Taste – talk by Brendan Fagan.

Farewell Social

A Farewell Social and Presentation to Father P.J. Fitzpatrick P.P. Loch Gowna who is leaving the parish for Mountemple will take place on this Friday 28 August in the Pikers Lodge, Loch Gowna at 8pm.  Buffet served 8.30pm to 9.30pm. All are welcome.

GROW Personal Development Course

GROW will hold a four week Personal Development programme in the Lus na Greine FRC on Monday evenings starting 28 September and ending on 19 October . Bingo

Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. Main Jackpot is €20K in 42 calls or less. Second Jackpot is building up nicely also. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard G.A.A. Clubs. Your continued support is much appreciated.

Siopa Lus na Greine

Our Siopa is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am – 5pm. Thank you for your continued support. We welcome your cast offs, bric –a – brac etc. these can be dropped to An Siopa. All proceeds from An Siopa go directly to the Centre to fund projects in the Community.

World Handball Success

Congratulations to Paul Brady, Mullahoran who won his 5th consecutive world handball title in Calergy, Canada on Friday last, 21 August. A welcome home and celebration party was held in Mullahoran Park on Monday night.

Deaths

The death of Elizabeth (Lizzie) McPhillips, (nee Dempsey), 2 Fairgreen, Cavan and late of Coolarty, Granard occurred on Monday, 17 August. Removal took place from Lakelands Funeral Home on Tuesday evening to Cathedral of SS Patrick and Phelim Cavan. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday followed by burial in St. Martin’s New Cemetery Drumavaddy. May she rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to her family relatives and friends.

Sympathy is extended to Monica Sheerin, (formerly Walsh, Main Street, Granard) and family on the death of her husband, Jimmy Sheerin, Jamestown Castletown, Geoghan, Co. Westmeath on 22 August. May he rest in peace.

Senior Championship

Mullinalaghta made their exit from the Co. Longford Senior Championship on Sunday evening when Emmet Og Killoe were victors on a score line of 2-10 to 2-7 in terrible wet weather conditions. This weekend sees the local derby again when St. Mary’s Granard take on neighbours Abbeylara. This game will take place in Pearse Park Longford on Sunday evening at 7.15pm. Clonguish play Colmcille in the other quarter final on Saturday evening at the same venue and venue.

Dancing Classes

Learn Irish dancing for fun or for competition with the Higgins-Flynn Academy of Irish Dance. Class will recommence in Hall at rear of Granard National School on Wednesday 2nd September 6 - 7pm. Beginners, boys and girls age 4+ most welcome. Congratulations to Oisin Flynn, Bunlahy who came 3rd in the U11 Boys Championship, Fionn Higgins, Mullahoran who won the U9 Boys Championship and Enya Higgins, Mullahoran who won the U10 Mixed Trad Set at the 2015 British National Championships in Manchester in July.

Greville Golf Society

The Greville Arms Golf Society recently held an outing in Glasson Golf Club. There was a good turnout and the weather was fine. The results are as follows: Longest Drive - Eugene Lynch. Nearest to pin - Sean Flood. Cat.B - Jim Finnen. Visitors prize - Ian Cambell. Second overall - Eugene Lynch. First overall - Leon Fagan. We would also like to congratulate Ned Monaghan on winning the presidents prize in Co. Longford Golf Club. Well done also to Seamus Finnan who was runner up in the Hanley Matchplay in Co. Longford Golf Club.
