Congratulations to Darren Hughes, son of Paul and Denise, Clonard, past-pupil of Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, who has been appointed Leinster Organiser of Ogra Fianna Fail, a fine achievement for Darren. Very much interested in Politics from a very young age, 19 year old Darren will oversee the party’s work at Leinster level over the next 18 months and involve himself in policy and decision making. He will have to ensure that Ogra Fianna Fail is active and working well and he will work as a go-between, between Ogra and their Headquarters. Death of Fr. Thomas Flynn
We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Jude Flynn, author of the “Fireside Tales” collection and to his sister Peggy and all their relatives on the recent death of Jude and Peggy’s brother, Fr. Thomas Flynn, former Parish Priest in Killoe and curate of Granard for 12 years. May he rest in peace. We take this opportunity to wish Jude the best of luck with his 12th Edition of “Fireside Tales”, which is to be launched at Longford Library on the 27th November.
A fund-raising concert is being held in Cooney’s Hotel on Monday, 24th November in aid of the Convent House Day Care Centre, Ballymahon. Special Guest Artist at the Show which starts at 10.00p.m. will be the very popular Mick Flavin. Also performing on the night will be The Sheerin Family, Aisling Wynn, Tony Moran, John Molloy, John Hogan, Camillus Egerton, The Ramblers, Carmel Sheerin and Sharon Turley. Your support for the hundred or so people who attend the Day Care Centre every week will be very much appreciated. The members of the Altar Society at St. Matthews Church work away quietly in the background to ensure that the church is cleaned regularly and that the altar linen and all that is needed for the celebration of the liturgy are properly maintained. New members are needed. The rota consists of a number of teams which rotate their duties, so that new members could expect to be available for one or two hours’ work every five or six weeks.

Visiting the Sick
Fr. Padraig has asked that if you have a family member who is in hospital or is housebound that you let him know. He brings Holy Communion to those who are housebound during the first week of every month and is happy to do so for all whom he knows about. At their last meeting, sympathy was expressed to their regular musician, Brendan Owens on the sad and untimely death of his sister Catherine Murray, R.I.P. The Group’s next Outing is to the Park House in Edworthstown on the 24th November, details at the next meeting. Why not go along to their weekly get-togethers and enjoy the activities, exercise, skittles, Bingo, Dancing and refreshments. Their meetings are held each Wednesday evening from 8 to 10p.m. in the Dean Egan Hall, across from St. Matthews Church.
Bowls are played every Tuesday night in St. Dominic’s Community Centre in Kenagh. All are welcome to attend and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.
Every Tuesday during Eucharistic Adoration in St. Matthews church, during the winter months, the whole church is heated. In order to reduce the annual bill for heating oil, the Eucharistic Adoration will be transferred to the Church sacristy during the winter months. Heating will be provided with an oil-filled Dimplex heater. Comments are invited with regard to this suggestion, which it is intended to be acted upon from the beginning of December.

Goldsmith Literary Summer School A.G.M.
The Goldsmith International Literary Festival group held their A.G.M. on Friday night last in Nally’s “Corner House”. Congratulations to Claire McCormack, daughter of Tommie and Frances, Moyvore who is now writing some articles regularly with the Sunday Independent newspaper. A past pupil of Ballymahon Mercy Secondary School, Claire wrote a very interesting article last week on emigration and its effects on Irish mothers and another this week on Anorexia. Community Games Gala Awards
The County Longford Community Games annual Gala Awards night was held recently in Rawle’s Pub in Ballinalee. Congratulations to Ballymahon/Forgney who were awarded with the McDonalds Cup which was presented to Shirley Maloney and Madeline McCormack, Shirley was also presented with the Hall of Fame Award by Chairman of Longford Community Games, Joe Fox. Congratulations also to Mary Forbes and Philip Maloney who were nominated for the Adult and Youth Community Games Volunteer Awards, they also received their awards at the Gala Night.
