GAA: Arva had Crosserlough as visitors to Michael Cully Park for the first round of the Cavan All County Football League Division 1B on Sunday last. After a tough but fair game Arva came out victorious. It’s a long time since we had the Black & Amber in Arva which shows the strides the players have made over the past few years. Fergal McGlade opened the scoring for the home side after 90 seconds with a well taken point. A number of wides followed for both sides until the 12th minute Crosserlough corner forward secured their first point of the day. Conal Sheridan added 2 frees for Arva on 15 & 17 minutes while the away side replied almost instantly with a Goal and a point to leave them 2 points to the better. Sheridan replied with another free which was cancelled out with a point from play from a Crosserlough corner forward before Sheridan closed the scoring for the first half with another point, this time from play to leave Arva trailing by the minimum 0-5 to 1-3 at the break. Sheridan was again on target with a pointed free to open the scoring 8 minutes into the 2nd half. Crosserlough never lay down and had another point on the board on 40 minutes which was quickly cancelled out by Sheridan again from a placed ball to leave the teams all square. 2 more points from Crosserlough on 43 & 44 minutes seemed to put a pep in their step but Peter Morris stemmed the tide with a well worked point with 10 minutes of the game left. Another converted free from Sheridan had the teams back on level terms with 6 minutes of normal time remaining. 2 points from Crosserlough in quick succession should have been enough to see them take the spoils but Arva’s James Morris led from the back and slotted over from the left after a great worked score the length of the field. Sheridan added to his tally with another pointed free on 60 minutes making it level pegging with only additional time remaining. Arva Sub Ciaran Cooney then added the game winning score on 62 minutes which left Arva with their backs to the wall in the final 3 minutes as Crosserlough tried furiously to find another score, which unfortunately for them did not come. Final score Arva 0-12 Crosserlough 1-8. Arva Team & Scorers; Shane McEntee, Thomas Brady, James Morris(0-1), Stephen Ellis, Ciaran Brady, Cormac McCabe, Paul Bouchier, Fergal McGlade(0-1), Cian Sheridan, Bryan McEntee, Jonathan McCabe, Peter Morris(0-1), Peter Conneely, Conal Sheridan(0-8)(7 frees), Raymond Daly. Subs: Shane Hamilton, Ciaran Cooney(0-1)
